Newb Storage Question

Hi,

I bought a case of RYJ Cedro Delue 2 cigars. They come in cellophane and cedar cases. When I smoke these they tend to unravel and the wrap feels a bit dry. I don't think I am over cutting, I just think the cigars are dry. Should I put them in the humidor minus the cello? Will that improve these cigars? Or am I just hosed.

Or, put another way, can putting cigars in a humidor minus the cellophane (or even with) repair dryness or other damage?

Thanks,

David

Cello on/cello off will not matter. I don't know what your current setup at home is, but get a digital hygrometer, calibrate it and check your humidity.

I put cigars in my Humi without cellophane...just more natural. The issues seems to be with your box, however, as Joe stated.

Did you season the humi?

Actually.. I don't have one yet. Its arriving this week. These cigars were like this the day I cracked the box. Currently, I have them in a tupperware container with a xicar humidifier tube in there. I guess I was just wondering if people get cigars from online sellers that are dry and if removing them from the cello and sticking them in a humi would serve to improve the situation or if I am hosed with the purchase.

They still smoke pretty good. Especially if I moisten it with my lips before lighting.

Your tupperdor setup sounds good. I don't think the celo will make much of a difference as far as the RH% goes. Not sure it answers your question but some of us prefer to keep newly bought cigars (from online or B&M's) in our humis for a week or two so they can level out. You never really know how well a B&M keeps their humidor or how long the cigars have spent in transit.

Putting cigars in my humidor to even out, and achieving optimal humidification is like putting a nice wine in a decanter for several hours before drinking......it's a must if you want to enjoy all the flavor profiles and truly appreciate the complexity

Speaking of putting the sticks in a humi to even them out.. how does that apply to boxes? Any tips there? Lately I have been really digging the offerings of Carlos Torano so I have purchased a few boxes with the notion of having a nice supply to draw on (no pun intended :)). Any tips on caring for boxes purchased that you plan on holding for awhile?

Currently, I have a box in a giant freezer bag with a boveda humidification packet. but the box is still sealed. Is that a good way to go? Or should I crack the box so that it can get airflow?

Thanks so much for the information. Its awesome to have a resource like this.

That should work fine. Basically, if the Boveda is not drying out quickly, it is doing its job. Boveda sells a plastic bag/humidipak setup, and states it is good for some specified length of time.
You'll notice that there is some air tranfer too, so that is actually desireable to a degree. Airtight for too long a time could lead to mold.

Did you try to search an answer to your question before posting? There is a termendous amount of info out there if you are seriuse about being proficient at storing your sticks. Do a little leg work prior to asking for help. It will go a long way to the amount help you receive.

I googled the topic. Found more about storing cigars in humidors than storing unopened cases. The one tip I found was using a drink cooler to keep the temp and humidity constant. But I am not really prepared to do that.

Sorry for the excess post.

I just ordered another box of Boveda packets (72%) and I love how easy they are to use, and the variety of humidification settings is great. I highly recommend the Carlos Torano Exodus 1959 50 years line......it's one of the best tasting cigars made in 2010.

Good advice so far. Be Patient and and do it right.

I'm hoping the name "Thompson's" doesn't figure into the initial dryness ??? It's amazing how many new smokers they snag. Don't buy ANYTHING from them.

I actually bought a few singles from Thompsons. But will do so no more. I have been buying from FSS and Tex Cigars. The (what I think were) dry ones came from FSS. But others from them have been fine.

I am seasoning my humidor. And am thinking about biting the bullet and getting a cooler for the whole boxes.

Listen to this wise man. I bought from them originally on my first purchase, the humidor was great, the cigars blew. Dont buy from them, atleast, dont buy anything they make. They carry other vendors stuff but sometimes its not the best taken care of. I highly recommend you not buy from them. I pass that store 3 times a week here in Tampa and Im never tempted to stop in.

Good call. I buy all my Opus from them.

DO NOT GO THERE TO PURCHASE ANY OPUS.

Some people are obsessed with their vendors- you will figure out the good ones and the crappy ones.
Personally I try to support the vendors here. Check out the newbie sampler.

Wow, thanks. After checking out their prices, they do seem a little steep. What is this newbie sampler you speak of?

Where is a good place to go for boxes of cigars? I've tried FSS, Best Cigar and Tex's Cigars. Price is of concern, but quality is a higher concern so I dont mind spending a bit more to get the good stuff.
