Inventions were created by individuals trying something new, or by mistake. It seems that due to the success of terrorists, the world is now afraid to let the innovators innovate.

My link

Edit to add: Probably not the smartest place to experiment, but he should be allowed to experiment.

I dunno, man. Worst case scenario he creates a bomb that kills hundreds if not thousands and then everyone wonders how the heck he was able to do these things without anybody knowing.

I'm all for experimentation and science but this is a bit more serious than tying a key to kite and flying it during a storm.

Yeah, he's splitting atoms.......it's not like he's making a new sole for a shoe.

I agree with the idea that it probably wasn't best place to be doing such a thing. I have the same problem with meth. It's just too dangerous and hazardous to cook at my house, in a neighborhood full of other families so that's why I made the smart choice and have taken it out to my cabin in the woods.

My opinion is an experiment such as this needs to be done in a controlled, and more importantly contained, environment. Not sure what the consequence should be, but I believe stopping it was the right thing to do.

I just don't feel that experimentation and innovation should be limited to government, big business and academia. They all have their place, but if this was the rule, how long would we have waited for someone else to present the world with a working wireless radio? Marconi did it all in the attic.

Now, did you publish a blog on your progress?

Not sure what he ever could come up, in helping society as a whole, from splitting an atom at home. Now, if he had a body of work in 'cold fusion', he could have said we was looking to create a new power source for all of humanity. Splitting an atom creates heat and a plethora of other volatile reactions not conducive to a kitchen environment :0

Yeah, but he may have really screwed up and revolutionized science. Most of Science's progressions and inventions are the rusults of unintended consequences, just look at Silly Putty.

Nor do I, however such things as this that can have catastrophic results if something goes bad, should be done in controlled enviornments. If Marconi blew a transistor, it wouldn't contaminate square miles of land. Nor could a radio left on a street kill hundreds.

I know what you're saying and I agree to a point but, IMO, this is beyond that point. As for the over regulation of less serious experimentation, well I blame a lot of other things, not just terrorist. Laywers, government, lobbyists, etc. But that might devolve into a taboo subject here.

ETA: if he was found in possesion of serious contaminating diseases (anthrax, ebola, smallpox, etc), would it make anybody else feel better if he was alledgedly working on these diseases at home to creat a cure? I know I'd be very worried if I was nearby.

+1 for all of what he just said!

And Viagra

but i am all for experimentation and i dont blame him from trying at home but i do think that anyone who was really smart enough to do it would also have the smarts to have first built themselves a bunker underground in the wood or mountains of sweden and then tried the experiment. through out time there have been scientist who have experimented in odd locations and through out time some of those have been to better society and other have been to destroy society. if he was doing it just because it would be cool then he is a fool and needs some time in a box to think or be experimented on. If he had all intention to say if i could do this then i can try and create another reaction that may bring forth the new energy source then someone hire the boy he might have something.

but i guess we are all glad there are rules so that we dont worry about someone doing this next door to us.
