The frustration of the ammo shortage

This ammo shortage is such a pain in the butt!

All rifles have a certain ammo they like and if you can't find it you are screwed!

Today I went to a couple ammo stores because I am low on ammo for several of my rifles. I was able to find 1 box of ammo for one of my rifles. This means I can only hunt with one or two of my rifles because I can't find the ammo for the others. Sometimes I hunt where I need a long distance flat shooting rifle, sometimes I need to hunt with a brush busting rifle, sometimes there are restrictions on what guns are legal.

I can't change ammo without test firing several different types of ammo to see what the gun likes and even if I could afford $250 to buy five different boxes, once I am done test firing, I am left with just a few bullets of the one my gun likes and can't find any more.

This sucks!

For example, when I bought my .223 sniper rifle, I went to the range with 6 different boxes of ammo and shot five-shot groups. The four different groupings you see below were the best of the 6. These were shot at 200 yards with a perfect bench rest, the orange dots are 1.5" in diameter. You can clearly see that the top left grouping was by far the best, all I needed to do was come up and right a few clicks. I went out and bought a case of that ammo and boy am I glad I did!

At 600 yards, the ammo associated to those bad groupings could not be assured of hitting a paper plate, the good one will hit a grapefruit.

Imagine trying to zero a new rifle? It would cost hundreds of dollars just to find out which ammo works best and then you can't find it!

Any rifle ammo around here is non-existent. Maybe Bass Pro or Cabelas has some in stock, but that's a few hours away. Good luck in your upcoming hunt. Be careful.

I heard a nasty rumor that Remington isn't making ammo anymore. I'll see if there's anything around.

Thx Remington just introduced a new ammo that I would like to try for my at 06. It's called Remington Core Lokt Tipped

They were going bankrupt then got bought. Supposedly to start making ammo again.
Oh no! I guess I better prepare to chose a different ammo for any guns zeroed with Remington ammo.

Here's a link to a bit of info on who bought Remington Ammo out of Chapter 11. Chapter 11 split all/most facets of Remington and they went to other companies. It'll be interesting to see how it all shakes out. Good luck.

Thanks Floyd!

As it turns out, I was planning on changing ammo for the two rifles I have which are zeroed for Remington ammo. This makes it an easy decision until we see how this transition works out.

I can't recommend handloading your own enough.

Components are hard to come by, but you can probably find them easier than loaded ammo in times like these.

Good luck building up your inventory no matter which path you choose.

I certainly can't argue that point. I just don't know if, at my age, I want to make the investment.

Not to mention, I don't remember if I am wearing underwear so the precision of reloading scares me a little bit!

I just checked, I am:)

In the event that anyone has what I need and geography will permit a trade, I have a few things I could trade. And a good bit of 12 gauge turkey loads.
I suppose I could find some Grape Whiteowls to trade as well.

Most pistol calibers are back on the shelves here, except 380. Can't find any goose shells to save my life either.

My dad was an avid reloader, pistol and rifle - he even reloaded .223 🤪 I got set up to reload all the stuff I shoot, plus inherited all his reloads and reloading gear. Pretty much set in the ammo department unless I decide to go hogwild at the range.

That .38 sp wadcutter, I got a buttload of that. He shot almost every week day at the indoor, .38 sp wadcutter through a .357, 15,000 rounds a year until macular degeneration took out his shootin' eye.

When I was a kid he was into trap/skeet and set up to reload 12Ga shotgun shells. Set me up to reload his 12Ga shotgun shells, I should say. I only ever hunted quail and pheasant and had a lifetime supply of that, one of his old shooting buddies came over and wanted to buy the MEC reloader, I just gave it to him.
