Being a newbie, I'm trying to learn as much as possible (cigar care, humidor care, cigars in general).

Naturally like any other newbie, they see or hear about Cigar Aficionado. Is it any good for a newbie?

Reason I ask is that I went on their website and found a couple things curious.

First, they seem to be a bit like Playboy. Long on the off-topic articles, short on the ummmm, pictures :p

Secondly they offer some new Netzine "Cigar Insider" for what seems like an additional $49

Isn't that the purpose of the main magazine? To give you the information that is contained in the Cigar Insider??

Newbie Just Wondering.....

CA isn't what it used to be. It has transformed from a cigar publication to a "mens magazine". In other words, less cigar talk, more general talk. Nonetheless, it's still a good read IMO. You should give it a try and see if you like it.

If you want to learn about storage, cigars, etc, you're better off reading cigar forums. Also, there are some good cigar books if you're interested.

Shame. Another mens magazine, a la Maxxim, GQ, etc. While they offer some ocular enjoyment..

Maybe I will pick it up to see if it's worth it. But when I saw the "cigar insider", it just seems they are out to gouge a little. Just sees like that info should already be in a magazine already devoted to cigars.

it's a great mag when they talk cigars...but as stated, more like a stuff/maxim less the woman. i got a free subscription, so no loss for me.

Very, very true. Beyond the content, just sit a current CA mag next to one from the mid 90's. It is 1/4th the thickness.

I want to know what happened to the classic covers like those of Demi Moore, Sharon Stone, Claudia Shiffer, and Bo Derek and such??? The closest thing lately was the Super Models of Cuba mag they did 2-3 years back.

I know that statement/question could lean toward the argument that it has become a "men's magazine" but I would much rather look at a cover with say Linda Evangelista than Denzel Washington or Keifer Sutherland any day!

Cigar Aficionado has changed a lot in the past few years. Much less about cigars and more about the "good life." That said, they still have reviews, the cigar diary, decent interviews with cigar personalities, and the reviews of aged/vintage cigars. All good stuff.

The main magazine is not meant to repeat anything contained in the netzine, Cigar Insider. Cigar Insider stands alone and is actually a better magazine for the cigar enthusiast. It provides reviews of cigars not done in CA, additional interviews, and more "inside" and legislative information. I have had subscriptions to both over the years. I have enjoyed both for different reasons.

I don't begrudge any company or person trying to make a litte money,a la capitalism! But I still wonder why the two separate publications. Just seems redundent.

No the ratings in Insider are completely independent of ratings of CA. Insider takes no advertising there for the ratings are more legitimate. Advertising can make or break you in CA. Marvin has the final say on a rating, so if your at say an 89 and you did a little more business with them you could make that 90! Of course ratings are BS anyway! It's an opinion. You have yours and I have mine. As a primer if you can find early issues you would be better served. Go into your local B&M and annoy those guys til you get your questions anwsered. I live for new guys to come into the shop.

Thanks Smoke. Yep, those advertising dollars do amazing things to supposedly unbiased, rated opinions.

I was looking at LCD monitors and happend across CNET for reviews and the like. Dell had advertising all over the place. Guess which brand monitor got top nods in the 15", 17" and 19" categories?

As far as questions, been doing a little bit of both at the B&M and here on the forums. Search engine is a good friend too....

Another mag worth a look is the one from JR's. It's a quarterly I think and they offer free subscriptions with a purchase...see the web page for the details.

mag link

It's a fun read. Mostly cigar content.

Cheers,
Joe

Thanks for the link! First time I heard of this zine. I wonder if that particular Colibri lighter is any good. Been having terrible luck with lighters lately.... :angry2:

Well if you are going to get the full spectrum take a look at this website for Smoke Magazine. They are another alternative to those mentioned above. Although, I believe it is only a quarterly. Just another rag to add to the pile LOL

True, but doesn't everyone want to read the 1/2" thick ADarticles on how to become a millionaire by buying someone elses videos or how to have a better sex life by taking a bunch of pills.... :p

cA magazine has an average of 20-25% cigar content each issue. WAY TOO little content for a magazine that is purported to be the "Be All End All" of cigar magazines.

Keeping in mind that opinions about cigars are subjective, (and I don't put much stock in ANY magazine ratings) the editors do the actual cigars reviews. That's like the fox guarding the hen house. Magazines like Cigar and Smoke have their subscribers do the reviews.

It has also been reported that they often don't even finish the cigars they are reviewing. They don't smoke enough of each cigar to review it properly.

And finally, cA does not target the bulk of the cigar smoking population. They cater to the affluent and the wealthy. Just look at the articles they have written. They feature items that the vast majority of smokers can't easily afford like luxury yachts, collectible sports cars, lear jets, super expensive golf vacations, and other high-dollar ventures. It is a life-style magazine like GQ with a smattering of cigar stuff ocassionally tossed in.

Granted, cA has done a lot for the cigar smoking industry. But beyond that it's useless.

Cigars smoking is not just for the affluent as cA portrays it to be.

In a word...NO!

LOL.....yep. Kind of comical though to become a millionaire by sending your money to someone else....hmmmm

Sounds as if they forgot where they came from. They may have helped guide cigars to main stream and help give it the "hip" factor but then went off in a tangent to the social elite.

I still may pick up an issue to decide for myself. I don't want to judge it without taking a look first. Although the cigar-magazine sounds a bit more promising.

Now if I can only figure out how to have people send me money so I can tell them how to be a millionaire.... :p
