Horrible Experience with Opus X ?!?!

New member here, and I just had an awful experience with my first Opus X. I know it's a high-quality cigar, so I'm scratching my head. I had problems with the light from the get-go and they persisted throughout the smoke. It burned unevenly throughout as well. I could tell it was a fine-tasting cigar, but I ruined my pallette trying to relight the thing all the time.

The only thing I can think of is that it was overhumidified. I had it in a humidibag for a few days. In addition, I've heard that Fuente ships them kind of wet to begin with. Anyone else had this experience? Any advice?

How long did you let sit at 65% humidity before smoking it.
The cigar shops I use generally over humidify their cigars.
I usually let them sit for a couple of weeks at 65% humidity before smoking them.

I agree with Junkman here. You definitely have to let cigars rest a little bit after purchasing. I usually don't let mine sit for a whole week because I am to eager to smoke my new stick :p. But it is recommended that you do so they can adjust to the humidity that you are used to smoking your cigars at.

I only had it in the bag for four days. I'll think about laying the next one up for a longer period of time. It's kind of weird to think that the store just can't sell them at the proper level for immediate enjoyment. Thanks for the link. The other thread was most enlightening.

Geez,

Looks like I have to be the one to make this post this time...

Yes, all Opus X suck. You should send all your remaining specimens to me for disposal. :p

Ben, some stores keep their cigars moister than is good and some keep them dryer. It's not always intentional. Some have a mix of too-dry and too-wet smokes depending on the geometry of the room, the humidification system and the interaction of that system with the room's HVAC system. I've been in humidors with greater than a 5 to 1 length to width ratio with the single humidifier at one end. Humidity varied by as much as 6-7% from one end of the room to the other. On the other hand, a more squarish room using a forced-air humidifier was much more uniform from shelf to shelf.

Most informative. Thanks so much for the responses everyone. Seems like a great site. And Ginseng, I honestly wish I had the kind of scratch that would result in "remaining specimens".

Yikes, sorry to hear it bro, haven't had one yet myself so I can't say much from experience. But from the sound of it I'd have to agree with the above posters. Let it sit a bit until it gets to where the rest of your sticks are when you normally smoke them.

Better luck next time.

Assuming of course that what you smoked is the real deal.

I can honestly say that I have never had a problem with any Opus X Viotola.

In my experience I've found Opus to burn poorly no matter how long it has been in my 65% humi. So now if I want to smoke an Opus I just set it out several hours before I plan to smoke it. I've yet to have a bad burn using this method. just my .02

I actually use the same method for the Opus X. I am not sure why but they smoke better dryer than other fuente cigars. Pulled a short story out last night while walking my parents dog and it burnt perfect. But with the Opus, they need to sit out a bit before they smoke well.

I have to agree with the above posts also. Definately needs to sit at 65% for a couple weeks in the humi prior to smoking. Or again, let it sit outside of the humi for a couple hours to let it get a little dryer before smoking.

my $0.02

I have never had a burn problem with an Opus and I keep mine at 70%. I think any brand of cigars can have a bad one in the bunch every now and then though. But Fuente has an, overall, pretty good track record for quality and consistency IMO.

This has been a long time/well known issue with Opii. I put mine in my drybox for a couple of days before smoking.

Smoked my second Opus X last weekend. My brother bought it from a tobacconist in Savannah and brought it up in a humi-pouch. She assured him that it was aged appropriately for an immediate smoke, and she was not lying. That was a beautiful cigar. Just remarkable. Thanks for all your help with this guys--I'm not sure I would've given this cigar a second chance if I hadn't realized what the problem was.

glad it worked out for you. i too, had a similar experience with my first Opus, and like you gave it a second chance. I now have some 6 month old ones and will smoke them when they are a year old. the 6mo. old was amazing.
