Cigar store on Post?

So, I went out this morning for my annual phycial fitness exam. Although I am Air Force, they force us to go to an Army post to do the exam. Anyways, I finished that up, and was exiting the post, when, through my blurry vision, I saw something that made me jam on the breaks of my car immediatly. This was a sign the read "Cigar Store". My curiosity got the best of me and was thinking why an Army post would actually have a cigar store since the military seems to be high on anti-smoking. Anyways, I pulled up the the front of the store, parked and walked in.

The entire B&M was no bigger than a typical master bedroom. Large open area with a shelf against the right wall with many accessories, mostly lighters, and CA magazines. I did not see any humidors, but apparently the store was brand new. To the right was a walk in humidor. After brief greetings with the employee, I ventured inside the humidor. I can only describe the smell that hit my nose as brand fresh spanish cedar. I don't know if it's normal for a new B&M walk-in to smell like this, but I did find it rather unpleasant. After a few minutes, I go accustomed to the smell.

The prices seemed moderate for some smokes, such as CAO Brazilias; kind of high for others like the Cohiba XV Extra Vigoroso. There were quite a lot of bag samplers that I liked, my favorite being an 11 count bag of LFD Chisels for $59. The guy working also said he would take an additional 10%, so besides there being no tax, I figured that would be a pretty good deal.

Unfortunatly, I blew my cigar wad for the month and could only window shop, for the time being. I believe I will be making a trip down there again to see if I can score a good deal next month. Until then... :)

Hey boondoggle,

Is AAFES running that cigar store? That would be decent if you could avoid local taxes on the smokes. A buddy told me AAFES had local vendor doing cigar kiosks, but we dont have them here in CO.

I'm retired AF. Never got stationed in the DC area, but got sent there many times. Loved the nightlife, hated the traffic.

Both our BX and Class VI store on Langley have cabinet humidors, selling mostly AF stuff. Ranges from Curlyheads, Cuesta Rey, through Chateau Fuente stuff. Never seen a dedicated store, though!

The tax savings definitely help even if their prices are mediocre.

We have the same cabinets at the main stores a shopettes here in Colorado Springs as well. They are never maintained, humidity levels rarely above 20%...essentially whatever the ambient level is. Full boxes that don't fit are just left ontop outside the humidor. I've avoided buying from them cause its just too dry here to trust that the smokes are being stored anywhere near properly.

In California, a B&M has to pay the excise tax on all tobacco products on shelves in a retail loation. For those outside of CA, thats 46.75% excise tax on top of the wholesale cost, paid upfront before you can even put them on your shelf.

Suprisingly though, if you sell to any military, you are exempt from the tax, including commissaries. So I guess the public sector can possibly set up shopand sell tobacco on bases.

Anybody really know though?

Ted

Ya know, the ones on Langley were fully humidified. They had electronic hygrometers in them, and seemed well maintained. I just got to Tinker, and they have the exact same one, but no humidification at all. At least not that I can see. Screw that!

Yeah, I think it comes down to how the shops are run locally. If you have a jackass who doesn't smoke, or is lazy, or doesn't really care; that individual wouldn't give a damn about the smokes or his patrons. He should therefore, be summarily exterminated.

AAfes seems to have a contract with FUENTE but there restocking is intermitinet at best. they have a fuente cabinet humidore in each of the shoppetes and px's here. My local shoppette is getting a new one and they are giving me the old one. I cant wait but re supply does seem to be a problem.
