I've been an avid outdoorsman / hunter / fisher my whole life, but just this year i got into watching birds w/ my 10 yo daughter, and we're having a blast feeding and observing these critters. Currently, we're seeing: Cardinals, Chipping Sparrows, American Goldfinch, Purple Finch, Pine Warbler, Tit Mice, Carolina Chickadee, White Breasted Nuthatch, Blue Jay, Mockingbird, and Dove.

Anyone else do this, and if so, what are you seeing?

I don’t do too much winter birding any more, but at the back yard feeders we have Black Capped Chickadees, Tufted Titmice, Slate Colored Juncos, Cardinals, Mourning Doves, Wht. Breasted Nuthatches, Red breasted Nuthatches etc. The other day a Goshawk moved into the neighborhood for a couple days. Sure got quiet.

Doc.

We use to have a bird feeder in the backyard and got to see a lot of birds. The kids sort of lost interest in it when a big black bear came and knocked it down and ate the feed, or tried to. Now they are only interested in big black bears. Go figure.

I've been watching them and feeding them for years:

Chickadees
Nuthatches
Tufted Titmouse
Juncos
Cardinals
Blue Jay
Starlings
About five different kinds of wood peckers
Mourning Doves
Gold finches
Purple finches
Eastern Towhe
Baltimore Oriole (last spring, not now)
Eastern Bluebird (again, last spring, none lately)
Sparrows (assorted)
Grackles
Red Winged Blackbird (more in the summer than now)
Cowbirds
Catbirds
Mockingbirds
Grosbeaks
Crows
Red Tailed Hawk (every now and then, they like to eat Blue Jays  )
Wild turkeys (I had 13 of them walking around here every day last summer, two mommies and 11 babies)

I actually saw a Scarlet Tanager about ten years ago :0

that's very interesting, i also had the same on turkeys this summer, saw them 2 mornings in a row, i went and bought a tripod automatic feeder and put it up, haven't seen them since. We have about 16 billion squirrels also.

LOVE to birdwatch...

I watch birds during duck season, bald eagles, golden eagles several varieties of wood peckers, turkeys, quail, woodcocks, snipe, rail. and many other river bottoms birds. I always take binoculars to enjoy the experience.

By buying a federal duck stamp you do much more good than harm when you hunt for ducks.

Right now I hear a cardinal at my feeder...too lazy to get up and check if it's the male or female.

We have wild parots around here and they stop off at the feeder once in a while.

My daughters and I enjoy feeding and watching the birds locally as well. So far we have seen: tufted titmice, bluejays, cardinals, gold finches, dark eyed juncos, brown headed cowbirds, european starlings, grackles, downy woodpeckers, hairy woodpeckers, yellow bellied sapsuckers, red bellied woodpeckers, chipping sparrows, house finch, carolina wrens, cedar waxwings, northern flickers, mourning doves, red breasted nuthatches, black capped chickadees, white breasted nuthatches, house finches, purple finches, and the rarest would probably be a pileated woodpecker that comes about once a week...he is nice to watch, but he empties the feeder in just a few minutes.

We too had many squirells...at least until I got a .22 :D.

The Wife® and I put up a bird feeder not long after moving into our house and I guess I've become a casual bird watcher. We keep an Alaska bird guide and a pair of cheap binocs on hand but lately, I've been thinking about getting into it more seriously.

Seen around the feeder...

Black-capped_Chickadee
Bohemian_Waxwing
Common Redpoll
Dark-eyed Junco
Downy Woodpecker
Golden-crowned Sparrow
Hairy Woodpecker
Red-breasted Nuthatch (my photo]
Steller's Jay (my photo)
Yellow-rumped Myrtle Warbler
...and a goddamned red squirrel that just about empties the feeder whenever he pays a visit.

Seen here and there...

Bald_Eagle
Belted_Kingfisher
Black-billed_Magpie
Common Loon
Common Raven
Horned Puffin
Red-necked Grebe
Sandhill Crane
Willow Ptarmigan
...as well as various ducks, geese, gulls, shorebirds, pigeons, etc.

How much do you feed yours? I'm going through about 10-15lbs of food a day, little bastids are flying pigs, might have to sell some cigars to buy bird food.

I buy 160 pounds (4 forty pound bags) of black oil sunflower seeds every couple of months or so, less in the summer.

You're probably using so much because of the squirrels.

I have a "Yankee Flipper" and a "Yankee Dipper" feeder that both hold lots of seed and are 100% squirel proof. Click HERE then click the "See The Video" block in the lower right corner, you'll laugh your arse off!

LOL! Too funny Bill.
Thanks for posting that!

That's funny! I've heard of these, but never seen one.

No, it's not the squirrels, these are squirrel proof, and i have a game feeder out 50 yds from the bird feeders that is loaded w/ corn and wheat. We just have a pile of birds, at any given time of the day there are 25 birds minimum around / on the feeders

Hey CC86, what is the little sparrow looking bird w/ yellow at the base of it's wings (breast side)? We can't find our bird id books, and this critter just showed up...
