A couple Tech questions - hopefully someone can help me out

I know this is off-topic for the board, but I'm hoping there's some closet techies out there that can help me out. I'm looking for two kind of random things...

First is a box that'll take the VGA/DVI video signal out of the back of a video card and convert it to UDP/IP video traffic over a network. Hopefully the original VGA/DVI signal will still be available to input into the local monitor, but I'm sure there's a basic splitter for that just in case. I'm hoping not have to convert from VGA/DVI to PAL and then to IP traffic because quality on the other end is important for this video.

Second, does anyone know of a VoIP phone that has fiber hookups? The new building I'm moving into has fiber to the desktop for security reasons, so it makes plugging in a phone impossible. For the computers, we've bought PCMCIA converters. I'm hoping to not have to buy a media converter for every phone, either, but haven't seen anything yet.

Thanks for any assistance. :)

Sorry John,

I'm a techie, but this is not really something I know much about.
I'm definitely intrigued about piping your video card output over the network, but I can't imagine it's purpose. I suspect this is based on my admitted ignorance, but I'd love to hear what that's all about.

Cheers,
Rob

The video is for a UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) simulator, actually. The only output is to a regular computer monitor, but I need the output of several of these available at several locations for an upcoming simulation. I don't know that these systems are authorized on the network we're using, so I'm not sure if a software-type solution (assuming one exists) is an option, either...

Thanks for the interest, though. For the phone issue, I'm still lost, but I am exploring the option of USB phones off the laptops (PoUSB;)), regular softphones on the laptops or (expensive) media converters that do PoE.

mmm its been along time since I've used the tech jargon so I'll dumb it down, you should be able to simply do a network stream of your video especially if the whole system is fiber there shouldn't be any lag. As far as VoIP the only phones available plug into an RJ45 jack or usb though the computer. I'm actually very surprised there not running fiber to each station and terminating it with a Cat6-7 connection or a RJ45 connection.

Hey, Mrepp. Thanks for the reply, but how? I need the image being shown on your screen, right now, in real time, converted into IP traffic and multicast out over the network. Do you know of a software or hardware solution that'll do that?

J,

No fiber phones available. To expensive of a propisition for vedors to tackle. I beleive ths only company looking into this is Verizon with the push of their FTTP networks.

fiber connections are very easy to break and add in the cost of a fiber switch.

Best bet would be to use fiber to copper converters.

If this is not an option .

Have you considered pulling wire to the new locations for phones?
Or have you considered a wireless option?

You should look into places that offer live streaming for conferences.

They will be able to host live streaming from the host PC. All user would be required to log in securely to the meeting. They would than be able to view the host machines output.

We use this for several live streaming demos of applications we look at before purchasing.

Neither one is an available option for the network these phones are on.

This isn't a public network, so I can't use any available services. I could install one locally, though. In fact, Adobe Connect (formerly Macromedia Breeze) has a "share desktop" feature. I don't know if the quality would be adequate enough though. It does offer chat along with viewing the desktop... hmm... I have to check if this UAV computers are allowed to send data into the network everyone else is on, though (versus just a black-box converter sending data on the network).

Thanks for the help guys. I've given up on the phones, but am still open to any other ideas for the video. :)

Adobe connect is not good for real time. There are some notable lag times (just like using RDC and VNC). But if you are on a fiber gigabit network it could be a different story. Interesting..do keep us updated!

I believe that most of these video streaming programs are designed for streaming a video file (mpeg, avi, divx, etc). If you need to stream video that's coming out of the video card, then it's not usable. I can be wrong though.
