The compnay I work for sends out an RSVP for the summer company picnic. Same thing as last couple years, they rent out part of some park with pavilions bla bla bla. Usually a few of us get together and bring some good smokes. Have the free beer and enjoy some great cigars. This year they specifically said - No Cigar Smoking! Can you believe that? Nothing about smoking cigarettes - just cigars. Apparently last year we offended some people with out smoking. Whats the heck is going on with people??? Outdoors and away from eveyone else and banned - crazy. Needless to say a few of us will not be attending. We're thinking about getting together somewhere else in protest.

Yikes, that's ignorant. I don't see the issue if you're away from everyone else.

I'm sure you don't want to cause a stink within your company, but if anyone smokes cigarettes out there I'd be up in arms.

Ditto what they said. I'm not sure what your level of employment is, or if you're easily expendable, but I would fight this. What if you and your buddies go, get your free beers and food, then go sit somewhere that's not in close proximity to the party and enjoy your cigars?

And if there's people smoking cigarettes then I'd throw a tantrum and tell them it's BS that you can't have your cigar, but these others can smoke cigarettes that smell like rotten ass.

Before the no smoking laws here in NY, some places used allow cigarettes but "No Cigar or Pipe Smoking"

The funny thing is, I've always found cigarette smoke to be much more offensive than cigars or pipes.

You guys should get a bunch of friends together and reserve the next pavilion over from the work picnic and have yourselves a Cigar Smokers' Picnic. :D

X3 with the other folks.

If they rent a space that's public properly and outside, it would seem a simple matter to walk away from the bunch, find a nice quiet spot, and enjoy one.

Personally, I'd not go, and make sure to tell them why. An alternate herf / event makes perfect sense to me. With pictures.....

Yeah, no kidding. If there's a "smoking area" it doesn't mean "cigarette smoking only area"......all or nothing, to be sure.

The day is coming, "soon" when it will be law NOT to smoke anywhere except your own home. Smoking is now banned on
San Diego beaches. Mind you, it wouldn't surprise me if our homes were banned as well.

Nobody to blame but ourselves. The guys that make the laws are the guys we put in place to make the laws :sign:

The day may indeed be coming when you can only smoke in your own private space. However, be careful to measure the value of your current job before you skulk off to smoke with your buddies. If you care, I'd advise you attend the picnic, enjoy a beer and the volleyball game, then proclaim in an obvious manner that you and others will be adjourning to some non-picnic real estate to enjoy the cigars and some fellowship. It might interest you who comes with, but doesn't smoke.

This is outdoors, correct? In a park of some type? Perhaps, and this is a big perhaps, but perhaps the park has some ordinance in effect on this. Check that first. But, if not, just who in the hell is your employer to mandate it? I'd tell them to fck off, try and stop me, and light up anyway. What's going to happen? I mean, realistically? You get canned? Unlikely, but if so, run as fast as you can to your local attorney.

Absolutely f'king ridiculous. Especially if "smoking" altogether isn't the issue, but just cigars. What's the point? Who are they trying to protect? What regs are they attempting to abide by?

At some point you gotta take a stand against such dipshit, and clearly discriminatory, mentality/behavior as this.

Good point on the ordinance... I wouldn't have thought of that.

If this was an event I'd normally want to attend and I enjoyed the company, I'd just walk around the entire time with a cigar in my mouth or hands. First to show I'm not one of those guys that _has_ to smoke or else I'll cry about it and second, to strike up cigar/smoking related discussion.

If I didn't care about the event and especially the company, I'd just politely move a little ways away from people and light up. Make me put it out.

About one week from now, I'll be at Casa Fuente, sipping a mojito and enjoying a fine cigar, in fine company, all the while watching the tree huggers coming down the escalator making faces at us. It just don't get no better than this!

I like Bruce's idea of adjourning to another location after making your presence known...that way you make a point without endangering your employment.

And the concept of seeing who else comes to join you is just too good to pass up on.
