Careers in the Industry?

So I've been looking into transitioning from my current employment (as the Sales Department coordinator for a Media Services Company) and in my research I keep hearing that you should strive to turn your passions into employment opportunities.

Which got me thinking about the Cigar Industry, and while I decided that this isn't my best path to start down I was intrigued by the possibilities.

Outside of the retail realm of cigars, what kind of careers are even available?

I'm not even sure I understand the distribution model of the industry? Are there multi-manufacture distributors, or do retails shops have accounts directly? Who Reps those accounts? Is there anyone around these parts that works as a sales rep for the manufacturers? What is the work like?
