New York, New York a helluva a town!
I was gifted three terribly obvious Fauxhibas by a non-smoker who just returned from a trip to the DR. He is a really nice guy (although some of you have tried to maime him in the past, My Doorman Carlos) So, I wanted to ask what you all think is appropriate. I have reasons for both telling and not telling him but I value your input as well.

Personally, I'd say thanks and tip him special at Xmas. If he thought about you and bought you what he thought you liked on a trip out of being genuine, then he's a super nice guy and you can make-up for whatever he paid for them in a gift. Don't spoil it for him..

If per chance you think he's doing it in order to GET a good tip, and knew they were fakes then I'd chalk it up as a jerk thing to do and go on.

Either way, I woudlnt' want to bring it up and possibly offend a nice gesture or antagonize someone who's tryin to get something out of you.

Vince that sucks! He probably got them because he knows you enjoy a cigar and this is a way of saying thank you. He'll probably be hurt to find they are fakes. Just let him know and make sure when the Holidays approach you hook him up with a few extra dollars and a note saying how much you appreciated him thinking of you when he went to the DR.

I partially agree with this. I would be thankful for the gift, but I'd also tell him so he doesn't waste any more money thinking he's getting the real thing.

I wouldn't say a thing, most likely. He did a nice thing for you, and it is not as if he is going to be buying them repeatedly.
Thank him kindly, and chalk it up to a nice guy doing what he thought was a really cool thing.

Say thanks, take care of him around the holidays and leave it at that. If he were a cigar smoker himself I might tell him in order to help him avoid wasting more money on the source, but since he isn't and he likely doesn't head to the DR very often, just let it go. The gesture is the important thing anyway.

Problem is he probably is from the DR and goes often. So this would happen again :(

Don't say anything, then re-band them w/ another isom band and give them to him for Christmas.

I would not tell him unless he buys you more fakes. Then I would do it to save him the money in the future as it would appear that he will continue to be a nice guy and gift you cigars from time to time.

Exactly, and yes he did it from his heart and is a super nice guy, but I do not want him to spend his money and get fakes. Especially when there are so many really ggood DR cigars to be had.

Ahaaa....I just answered my own question...next time he is going I will give him soem money and tell him to get a specific NON-CUBAN brand...that should take care of it and not hurt anyones feelings!!!

X2 - if it's just this one time, there's no reason to make him feel bad by telling him; if it keeps happening, tell him thank you for the thought and you don't want to hurt his feelings, but to save his money. Just be kind about it, as he's obviously a really nice guy!

While in theory this is a really good idea, I think I remember hearing that it is actually harder to get the god domincan cigars in the DR than it is here. Something about export-only rules? Someone with actual knowledge of this might chime in.
Nice to have a cool doorman, though!

This is true for Arturo Fuente and the other major brands, but you can get some brands over there.

That's what I'd do.

This time, thank him for his considerate intentions. Next time, thank him for his considerate intentions and express concern about the cigars possibly being fake and let him know you would not want him to spend any more money of fakes. Tell him a postcard (since he's your doorman, he probably knows your address) would be just as well appreciated.
