::EDIT:: So my new humi FINALLY came in, and I'm seasoning it now, I'll be posting pics up soon! :D

::EDIT:: New pictures posted! :D -->SEE BELOW<--

So I've got a new humi coming in, it's my first humidor ever, and I only know two people who smoke cigars. My humidor is an approximate 200+ count humidor, and the two cigar smokers I know do not own humidors that are near that size. So I guess my question is, as every newbie that comes into this forum has an annoying question: With a humidor this size, are there any special considerations I need to take in while seasoning it?

Also, what is the basic process of seasoning?

Additionally, I am concerned about how many humidifiers I'll need to maintain the humidity levels in the humidor I have coming this Wednesday. I have some Heartfelt Industry beads on order and am hoping for the best. I basically don't want to spend a whole ton of money on products that don't work, but I am more than willing to spend a reasonable amount of coin to make sure my investments (AKA "my sticks") are properly stored. I have a couple boxes on incoming shipments and I want to be ready for them.

Thank you guys for the help, I can't wait to see the replies. :D

PS- Here is my incoming humidor (http://www.humidorvault.com/Ebano-200-Ciga...p/hum-ebano.htm) from Humidorvault.com.

Here are the pictures:

I made sure to mark my pictures as "Humidor 02/2008" because I'm sure come six months later, my humi's going to look MIIIIGGHHHTTTYY different!!

That's a nice looking humi, but it's far too small. :)

If you search the boards, you'll be able to find the answer to any question you have regarding seasoning. To answer you question, a humi that size doesn't require any special considerations. As far as how many humidifiers you'll need, viper's site has a calculator that tells you how many ounces you need based on the inside dimensions of the humi (judging by the outside dimensions listed on your link, 5 oz will do you well).

Just a word about the heartfelt beads. Maybe it's just me... but I'm finding out you're much better off to OVER estimate how many bead tubes you'll need. According to his calculator 2 oz. should do it, but I have 3 oz. in my 100ct. right now and the RH has been dropping to 60%... even after a couple weeks of seasoning.

So I'm going to up it to 4 oz. (one 2 oz. tube, and two 1 oz. tubes up top), along with a second hydro in the bottom area to see if that works better for me. Viper says on the site that you can buy more than what's recommended and it'll serve to work even better anyway.

You can search these forums and even do some google searches about seasoning. It seems there are three basic schools of thought. You can either season by lightly wiping the wood down with distilled water... or you can put a dish of water in there for a while, or you can use Boveda packs. I opt for #2 usually as I've heard quite a lot of debate over wiping the cedar down.

Nice humi btw!

Thanks man. I have always been told to wipe it down, but I ordered some Boveda seasoning packets and I will probably put in a dish of distilled water then. Also, I ordered a pound of the heartfelt beads off the site, so I should have some extra. I read another thread on another forum about converting your existing humidifier into one filled with the beads, it was pretty good info. I plan on doing that to the two brick humidifiers on the lid, then I ordered two extra 2 oz. tubes from Heartfelt...hopefully that'll do the trick!

Nice looking humi!

And I agree with all of the above......you will either outgrow it very soon or give up the passion......use more beads as I think David's calculations are based on a perfectly seasoned and sealed humi and it would just make sense to err on the side of caution as almost all humis leak a little and some leak a lot.

Take a picture of the inside the day you first put your sticks in it and then another picture in six months

Good luck and welcome aboard

I will post some pics!! And I am damn sure I won't be outgrowing this passion for a WHILE!!

I would not be so sure about that!! These crazy members have wild idea! Nice looking humi, but they are right you should have gone bigger! :whistling:

Sounds like you're set. Just be careful wiping it down that you don't get carried away. Some people don't do that step because it can warp the wood. I personally have done it to all my humis and haven't had any problems. The biggest thing to remember with seasoning a humi is patience.

Well, I wiped it down on day two of seasoning it, and now I'm sitting on my hands going NUTS!!! I'm waiting for this thing to be seasoned, so in my panic and impatience, I went out to a cigar shop and bought a couple rocky patels to smoke....

Hopefully that, mixed with the upcoming work weekend, I won't touch it and I'll be patient. Thanks guys!

Don't rush the seasoning process. I learned that lesson the hard way once. For a humidor that size, I would place a small pan of distilled water inside the humidor for 1 week. Check the RH every 2 days. You should be able to get it up to around 80% RH. After a week the humidor should be stabilized. Toss the beads in there, and you should be all set to go. I would leave the beads in there for a week, and make sure the RH is staying at around 65/70%.

If you rush the seasoning process and place your cigars in the humidor before obtaining proper conditions, you will have an ongoing problem maintaining proper RH. Mine as well do it right the first time. :) Good luck!

X999999 to what Rod said. :) My first 100 count I didn't season well enough, and it drove me nuts for a while, but then being newb I said it must be the humi and bought a new one! lol. Oh well, least I went to a 300 count. Also, I have 12oz of beads in it, and the calc only calls for 7 I believe. Cannot have too many beads. Just helps recover faster and keep it right IMHO. Good luck and enjoy!!!

This is how it starts. I had 2 desktops then moved to a larger 5 drawer glass door one. Now I have a tower and have been working to install TE devices to cool it. My wife saw me walking around the house tonight and asked me what I was doing. My answer to her was "wondering where I could build a walk in humidor"

She told me she would leave. Like a dumbass I said "cool then I could use your study for the walk in" she got a kick out of that.
