We went through a cigar boom back in the late 90's, where you saw everyone and their grandmother coming up with new cigar brands. There were literally hundreds of different cigar brands popping up everywhere. Then things seemed to have died down, until recently. Now 10 years later, it's as if we're going through the entire cycle again. I'm noticing more and more cigar start-ups popping up everywhere. Of course most of these guys aren't rolling their own cigars, they're having cigars rolled for them by one of the bigger, more established company's.

Not only have I noticed an increase in new cigar brands sprouting up, but also that it seems more of the younger generation is getting into cigar smoking. I think this is great. Cigars are a very unique hobby, in that there is a strong brotherhood/tie which a lot of people tend to be part of. Our rights as smokers are being taken away from us more and more everyday. It's good to see the younger generation getting into cigars - this will help keep the hobby moving forward.

Just curious to see how many others see the boom as well. I think the boom has already arrived, and it's probably going to get even stronger over the years. Eventually through attrition, we'll see a lot of the newer company's fall to the wayside, while the few (newer) company's with a great product actually survive.

This will be fun. During the last Boom there were indeed some good blends that came out of it, and some experiments that were real hits. Unfortunately there were some smokes that made me want to shave my toungue. The only thing constant is change, so bring it on. This should be fun, especially here at CP with the ability to hear so many diverse opinions and maybe even try some in a pass.

Working in a shop based in a college town, with a college consumer base, I can guarantee the popularity of cigars and more importantly pipe smoking is steadily on the rise.

I can't wait to see what happens in the near future.

I love it, and hope that the mini boom continues. I think cigar smoking is such a forgotten past time for younger crowds. It just doesn't hold the same mystique as it used to, not to mention smoking its the society's current witch hunt. Most of my friends just either smoke crap "cigars", cigarettes, or illegal stuff....and they all look at me like I'm crazy when they find out I'm seriously into cigars. Its all good! I love the friendships that come from this terribly-bad-for-you past time.

Is there really a cigar boom going on or are marketers just pushing more product? I know that sounds like the same thing, but it really isn't.
If it were a real boom, wouldn't prices be falling instead or rising?
Plus, it's only a boom if the cigar populace at large makes it so. I'd like to think the we're smarter purchasers and can recognize a dog rocket from quality product. If we decide to start buying every Tom, Dick and Harry ciger then we are the cause of the boom.

I completely agree, though I kinda feel like it's happening for a different reason. In the nineties it was about wretched excess. Today, there seems to be a trend toward "getting back to basics". I find that people are trying to enjoy much of what their parents enjoyed. This is a good thing because it should hold stronger than the fad of the nineties, IMHO.

We're in the midst of a mini-boom, to be sure, but legislation will likely temper or even eliminate it.
I'm with moki on this one. I think the legislation is going to become much more far reaching in the near future squelching any boom that may or may not be occurring. If it goes too far it may move back a bit, but it won't move back any farther than it has reached already. I'm weary that we're in the midst of one of the last generations to enjoy tobacco without becoming COMPLETE pariahs.

Im not sure if there is a boom. But I do see an increase in yourger ppl smoking cigars. The shop I frequent has a customer base of I would say 50% college age kids. Every time I am there I always see the same young kids. It is nice too see them enjoying a cigar.

The social milieu is certainly different than it was in the early and mid-nineties. We're in a bit of a revival if you ask me, but not a repeat of the "boom." A revival is potentially sustainable and has more "soul" than does the boom which is more reflexive and based on non-cigar values.

I like your thinking Wilkey. I only hope this "soul" comes with a bit of "backbone". We're going to need it.

Cigar boom? You decide.

"Final 2007 figures are in, total imports into the US of premium cigars reached the 2nd highest total ever, 335,167,000! Only higher year was 1997 at the height of the cigar boom (417.8 million)."

I hope this helps

As a college student, I can say that many of my friends enjoy cigar smoking or are at least open to it. A handful of them even have decently stocked humidors as well. In New Haven, the Owl Shop is frequented by a large number of college students. For some it is a frequent pasttime; for others it is a nice change of pace from the usual college nightlife. Overall, there is certainly a moderate affinity for cigars on campus.

So can any parallels between the legislation to curb smoking and the legislation that resulted in the Temperance Movement be drawn? Or has our government learned that the revenue gleaned off of this "evil" is too substantial to eliminate it all together?

According to my wife, what the cigar market is experiencing is not a broad based boom. As a business professor, she says the sudden spike in cigar sales is directly related to how rapidly my single humidor turned into multiple humidors, and the number of withdrawls from our checking account.

:)

Garvey,

Your wife and my wife think on the same wave length. I just purchased a 300 ct humi on cigarbid.com. Of course I had to purchase a few extra cigars to begin filling it.

Did you people live through the same cigar boom as me. It was not a good time. Good cigars and tobacco were in short supply. Dog rockets sold for ridiculous prices. A Ct. wrapped AF Château Fuente became a rare cigar. You all better hope we don't have a boom like that one.
