Hi guys, i ordered a humidor last week and finally got it delivered today via fedex.

I have a handful of cigars i want to throw in there to keep safe, but am not sure if it is safe yet. A few are pretty expensive Gurkhas. I was wondering how to calibrate the meter. Once i have done that do i just simply fill the sponge like box with distilled water until it doesnt soak up anymore? Do i need these heartfelt beads or seasoning packs?

I filled the sponge type box up with distilled water and placed it in the humidor, it is only reading about 62 humidity in the box itself, i need for it to be around 70 for best storability correct? will this breaking in process bring it up to 70?

Also if i store cigars in my humidor while it is not at 70 will it hurt my cigars? or while i am breaking it in will it hurt my cigars?

Thanks everyone

Towards the bottom of this forum, you'll see a white text box that says "Google Custom Search". In that bar, you can type in what you're looking for, ie "how to season a humidor" "how to calibrate a hygrometer", etc... You'll receive all of the answers to your questions; and if you don't, feel free to post back any questions you may still have.

Easiest way is to calibrate it using the salt test.

You can do either...most choose the beads because they are reliable and easy to maintain.

To season the humidor, you can do what you're already doing but it will take quite a while. You can also take distilled water on a rag and wipe down the inside and the tray to get it done quickly or put a shotglass with water in it until you've reached your desired range.

Humidity of a humidor is purely up to you and how you like your cigars. My cabinet is kept around 67 all the time. It would be best if you didn't keep your cigars in the humidor while you're seasoning it.

If you do a search on the keywords in each of your questions, you'll be able to pull up quite a few threads on each of them that will answer your questions quite a bit more thoroughly than I did. Good luck on your quest.
