I am waiting for my first humidor in the mail, which should arrive in about 3 days. I have already had my cigars out of a humidor for about 4 days, not including the time it took for them to arrive to me from Famous. Needless to say, I fear that they will be too dry by the time the humidor arrives and I have it ready to go.

I have been reading about how to properly setup a humidor, including calibrate the hygrometer. Can I use the calibration process to at least help add some humidity to the cigars while I wait? I was thinking of using a measuring cup with some salt and water. What do you think?

If this will work, what ratio of water and salt should I use?

put the cigars in a tubaware with a clean paper towle with some distled water on it donte soke the paper towle just damp should help

I'm not sure either. The humidity here has been in the 10-20% range. My St. Luis Rey still 'feels' nice, as does the one I bought from a shop the day before yesterday.

With that, I just threw it i with a measuring cup about 1/4 full of salt, added some water until I got what I describe as a 'snow like' consistency. It has gone from 20% to 60% in about 5 minutes. Going to keep a close eye on it and remove it if it jumps too high. I may have too large of a salt container, as Ive read people calibrate hygrometers with just a soda cap full of salt.

Just do what fivebyfifty said. A tupperware or ziploc bag with a dampened paper towel (with distilled water) and seal it up. You'll be fine. Don't do the salt test to your cigars. Unless you like salty cigars. :D

I second this. I tried the same thing when I first started and the results were less than stellar.

Most B&Ms sell Humidpak Humidor bags, try one of those, here is the website: Humidipak

Tupperware container, some distilled water on a clean sponge added to the container. Or, you can go to your local B&M and buy a jar of the humidifying crystals and place it in the tupperware.

It's gonna take a while for your humi to get seasoned, so you should get something that will allow you a week or so of temporary storage for them.

Good luck.

Most retailers will send you cigars with some form of humidification in the package. Did Famous? If they did, you're ok. Otherwise, I don't know how good they can be, with this weather and all. Anyone have any thoughts?

Of all the places I have ordered cigars from, your shipping methods are the best. I'm afraid most places fall short of your standards. Your attention to detail is most appreciated and in a class all by itself. I look forward to purchasing from you again in the future, just as soon as I make some room in the fridge.

The biggest problem is that I don't have a B&M in my city. Just looking for the best thing possible. Humidor should be here in 2-3 days, another few or so to season, I assume.

Seasoning could take weeks, depending on the box, how dry it is when you get it and the RH of your environment. Tupperware, a humi-pak or distilled water on a clean sponge or paper towel. You can buy disposable tupperware at most grocery stores these days if your one of them young male types without a kitchen or a wife to steal them from.

When I decided to reseason my humidor I took the cigars out and put them in ziplock bags with no humidification because I assumed it would only take 3-5 days to season. On day 5 (after some spilled water in the humi) I decided to move the cigars into some tupperware with a Drymistat Crystal Humidifier (Which I purchased at my B&M.) Threw an analog hygro I had in the tupperware and the tube humidifier kept it right at 73 (+/- 5 due to the fact that it was analog) which I was fairly happy with considering the smokes were only in there for about 11 days. Once the humidor was ready, I threw the sticks in there. I have smoked a few of them and they are all fine. I would suggest doing something similar to this to avoid any issues that might arise from leaving the cigars out.

I used a Ziploc bag, and bought a temporary humidification pouch. A damp paper towel will work also. Or you could just a shot glass full of distilled water, as long as YOU KNOW it will not get tipped over.
