It is currently a beautiful and chilly night from what it has been for the last week or so here in Michigan. I am sitting on my porch smoking a nice La Riqueza no. 9 (I think) paired with a glass of water and I was having issues putting a thumb on the flavors I am finding in this cigar. As I am thinking, an idea pops into my head on how to get more of the pure flavors without the standard cigar flavor confusions. Similar to hooka (which I haven't tried yet), what if you were to take a drink of water, leave it in your mouth, take a draw of the cigar, let the smoke out and then taste the water. I am not sure if I am on to something but I sure did get a better sense of what flavors were hidden in this stogie. Have any of you heard of tasting a cigar this way?

Damnet you had to post this just as I finished my cigar didn't you?! :sign:

Ill have to check this out next time I smoke. I always smoke my cigar of choice with a glass of water and a sweet tea. But Im not one to be able to pick out the taste of "Sweet hints of Brazilian coco accompanied by Macadamian nuts with a smooth Cedar finish".

I smoke what I smoke and I either think its a good cigar or just ok, then there are the GREAT cigars. Those get me in trouble with my wallet ;). I think its all about who you are, everyone has different taste and can pick out different taste from a cigar, and some people can really pin point flavors that I would never be able to catch.

Thanks for the thread though, ill definitely have to check this out next time I smoke. Cool idea!

Intresting idea, I like it!!! I take it this is the method for smoking from a hooka? A friend of mine is offering a hooka night at their resturant on saturday nights , I advised more of a cigar night.

hmmm. I've never smoked that way (not even at a hookah bar) but I'd be interested to hear how it works out for you. Sounds a little like gargling bong water which I never found all that pleasant...even if it means your friends have to pay you a dollar for you doing it.

But you are not drinking the water in the hookah, or even getting it in your mouth - you are just passing the smoke through it so you would get nothing from the water except the cooling effect. Little bit of a difference. I have found it rather hard to smoke while having liquid in my mouth, at least without almost choking myself out.

Cigars taste like tobacco. Different tobaccos taste differently, but they all taste like tobacco. Why do you lads insist on making a simple pleasure more complicated that it needs to be. The idea behind smoking a cigar is to relax. It is impossible to relax under the stress of trying to taste what is not there. I wish you folks could have experienced cigar smoking before Cigar Aficionado and the cigar boom they perpetrated upon the community. Life was simpler then. No chocolate, no leather and no nuts.

Doc.

Now, if you could gargle to the tune of a tobacco growing nation's national anthem, well, that might make a difference.

What Doc Said

I'm lost on this, Doc states it best. Smoke the cigar for what it is, tobacco and if you like it buy more of the ones you like.

but here is the thing doc... I discover cigar before I even knew that their were a bunch of ppl getting paid to write dissertation when smoking
I do pick up sometimes flavors in the tobacco that reminds me of Chocolate sometimes or even nuts... Ok leather was more a reminiscence of leather then I don't know the actual taste of leather LOL
Also... some of the cigars are $15 plus... I am just trying to describe has much as possible for me to leave a cigar tasting trail =)
My 2 cts

Personally speaking, I roll my eyes a bit when people talk of tasting these extravagant things while smoking. Yes, I get some tastes as well but it's usually rather basic.

If I could say something similar to what Doc said, you can watch a movie and pick apart every detail of the story, acting, direction, editing, etc. or you can just enjoy watching the movie and let yourself get sucked in.

Just my .02

Nothing wrong with getting sucked! (I mean sucked in)

I have to agree with just enjoying the cigar and if you catch a wiff or hint of some flavor, good.

You forgot pepper and coffee...they too are listed in the "How to write a cigar review for noobs" thread somewhere however I simply refuse to search so maybe some one can link it for me.

What someone should really try is chopping up an opus and smoking it in a bong! Gary what do you say?

I'd be more into expresso nowadaze!

I agree with Doc. I don't write reviews because they would be awfully simple ie "Cigar X was great/good/blah/crappy and was full/medium/mild" with some pictures.

Yup thats how I review, minus the pictures. I laugh everytime I read "with hints of leather"...and then they go away and come back..I tried to taste a few times, but said the fuck with it and continue to relax..

Ah, the old gubernatorial hallucinations again. There was a scene in Good Will Hunting when Minnie Driver told the old Irish couple joke and the punchline required her to dribble liquid out of her mouth. This is what I picture happening if you were to attempt to take a drag off of a cigar with a mouthful of water.

Without getting too explicit, if you want to get sucked....,um, well, uh, off, that's a whole 'nother movie at another theater across town! :whistling:

I've seen videos on Youtube where guys smoke pipe tobacco in their hookah, maybe that's what you'll end up doing looking for taste. There are those that will continue to push the envelope in any hobby, craft, or sport. Speaking of which, try sticking a cigar with growth hormone, maybe it will get bigger in your humi :sign:   jus' kidding.
I say try it and let us know what you find out, at least you'll satisfy your curiosity!

My dad is so old school when I give him cigars, he bites the end, lights it with a Bic, and cuts the burnt end off with his garden shears so he can smoke it later. Daaaaaamn, doesn't worry about what people say or think, just enjoys himself

I'm probably middle of the road in this arena, I find it hard to taste things like granola smoothies (couldn't help the ribbing), but I do know what a dog rocket tastes like. As someone here once said, "I don't know, I've never chewed on my belt before so I guess that's what leather tastes like". For those that can taste all those flavors and write reviews, keep 'em coming so I have something to look forward to while smoking.

I like trying to find different flavors in a cigar. Ultimately it's all about enjoyment, but it can be a fun activity to do while smoking. I still mostly get tobacco, but I can think of a few cigars where the flavors really pop. Just this newbie's $.02. I'm not sure I'll try this technique, but let us know how it works for you.
