I love black Licorice. Regular, not the ammonia spiked kind.

I have been looking for a bottle of Anisette, and all that is available locally is De Kuyper.

Does anybody know if that brand is any good? Can I do a lot better?

I am hoping some of you can write your favorite Anise type liquors.

Perhaps some of you can offer some advice, good brands, flavor descriptions, etc.

All inputs welcome.

(well, except from that lunatic punk_lawyer)

Thanx!

Just go with a nice higher priced Absinthe. That should give you enough anise taste, alcohol and hallucinogens to keep you happy for quite a long time! :whistling:

I was just about to say the same thing. Lucid is often on sale around these parts.

Although...if you'd like, I can just soak some star anise in vodka for you. Probably not exactly what you want but maybe it'll get you close?

My recommendation as well. You've never had a drink that tasted like black licorice until you've had Absinthe.

I assume that Sambuca and Jagermeister are too obvious to merit suggestion, but if you want to get exotic you can try Aguardiente, Colombia's national booze. I've got a bottle of Aguardiente Cristal that sits in my liquor cabinet for when I'm feeling adventurous and/or forget that I don't particularly care for it much. It's a pretty crisp, astringent, and only mildly licorice-y anise flavor.

Next time you're drinking a pint of Guinness, eat some Good 'n Plenty at the same time. It'll blow your mind.

Had a couple bottles of Ouzo from my Greek neighbor that I enjoyed at the time. Certainly tastes like black licorice. ;) I don't know what's available to get here in the States, though.

I hated liquorice when I was a kid...but for some reason, all that Jagermeister in college changed my mind.

Now I love anise-flavored stuff! Absinthe, ouzo, anisette...all good choices.

All add one more to the pile: raki! Almost the same as ouzo, except you drink it with water (and ice) like absinthe and it changes colors to a milky white. Turkish folks'll get hammered on that stuff! They never let Islam get in the way of a good time!

The four I recommend are:

Ouzo - My favorite brand is Barbayannis

Raki - My favorite brand is Yeni Raki

Sambuca - My favorite brand is Molinari

Anís - My favorite brand is Anís del Mono

I don't really like Absinthe, but that's mainly due to the Czech crap sold over here. I plan on getting a bottle of Doubs Mystique "Carte d'or" to see if it changes my mind.

Make your own. It very easy, cheaper, better, because you control the quality of the ingredients, and traditional.

15.7 oz. (466 ml.) 100° proof Vodka (non-flavored)
7 drops anise oil
9.6 oz. (284 ml.) simple syrup
1 tsp. (5 ml.) glycerin (optional)

Add alcohol to the bottle in which the anisette will be stored; add anise oil and shake vigorously until all oil is dissolved (1 min.) Add the rest of the ingredients and again shake well. Presto—it's ready to drink!

30% Alc. by Vol. (60°). Makes 750 ml.

You can tinker with this recipe and concoct a blend that suites you.

Doc.

Just wanted to add on the funny side that this is dangerous if ingested by itself and eats though paint. Unless you are Doc who I have heard rumors can eat an entire airplane for breakfast.
