How to be a contributing member.

Marine6186

...oh you want me to say something.
Hey Gents,

First off I just want to say I am sorry if this has been asked before. I did a couple searches and found nothing.

I am sure most of you have seen me around the site from time to time. I am very new to cigars so I have been soaking in as much information as possible from this site. I received a humidor for Christmas from my brothers and followed "Guide: How to season your humidor" and my humi is doing great! I have received a couple generous gifts from Ed (Pugman1943) and Dan (rochestermayo.) Not to mention all the others who welcomed me into the community and have given me great advise.

That is all amazing. This is the BEST forum I have ever been apart of. It is a true brotherhood. But, I feel like the little brother that follows his older brothers around because he thinks they are cool. I want to be a contributing member of this community but, I don't know where to start. I know it all comes with time. I know the longer I am here, the more I read and the more I smoke the better I will be.

I was wondering if anyone has any tips to help me feel more part of the community. I can't really join in on the cigar talk because I don't know enough. I feel like all I do is add meaningless post. I want to join a pass but my cigar selection is minimal and I understand that most members won't allow someone as fresh as me to join their pass (which is completely understandable!)

Any advise would be greatly appreciated!

Mario

Hang around, stay out of the crap, chime in when you can. That's about it. There's no shortcut, as you said, it comes with time. You'll have knowledge to share before you know it, though. There's always someone newer than you that shows up eventually and if you're searching for answers, you'll end up coming across all sorts of knowledge.

Have you done the newbie sampler trade in the Buy/Sell/Trade Forum? That's a good way to get your feet wet and start building relationships here.

We have a saying around here....read more post less. This will allow you to learn lots from this great community and keep yourself out of trouble. Once your knowledge increases, you can then pass your newly gained info to the next new members.

Enjoy your stay. :)

My Advice would be to jump in where you can, and stay out of drama you don't understand or are not involved in.

Go on over to the review page, feel free to ask Kingantz how he knows what assless chaps taste like. Head into sports or booze and join discussions of your favorites or least favorites.

Have opinions, bet keep in mind that that is all they really are, your opinion. Have fun getting to know people.

It always comes back to read more and post less doesn't it. Staying out of the drama helps too.

Agreed, except for the assless chaps thing.

I don't get embarrassed, I get even.

Uh huh....

In all seriousness, we take the 'read More, Post Less' saying VERY seriously. So far, you seem to be doing ok

If you get into any deals, be sure to pay your debts in a timely and sincere manner. Don't get into a heated thread, much less post any one liners or smilies trying to be funny - it'll backfire... and certainly don't be the CAUSE of a heated thread! Ask good questions IF you search for them first (search is your frieeeeeeeend) and don't find the answer. Try to meet other CP'ers in your area for a herf....

And should you take a beating in a thread, take it like a man. Own up to a mistake, don't get argumentative or personal, and lay low. Take your lumps, move on and learn from it.

And have fun!! Loads of GREAT info, and some decent people, here.

A fellow noob like yourself, I've learned a lot since joining! Just hang around and try to poke fun or make random jokes about sneeds and souldogs love affair.

Again, thanks for all the advice guys. I will keep it all in mind.

I think I will wait awhile before I start making fun of the big guys...

*correcting my grammar error :whistling:

advice (usually uncountable; plural advices)

  1. An opinion recommended or offered, as worthy to be followed; counsel. We may give advice, but we can not give conduct. — Franklin

to advise (third-person singular simple present advises, present participle advising, simple past and past participle advised)

  1. (transitive) To give advice to; to offer an opinion, as worthy or expedient to be followed; to counsel; to warn.
  2. (transitive) To give information or notice to; to inform; — with of before the thing communicated. We were advised of the risk.

We tend to harp on grammar and spelling as well. Think of it as a learning opportunity.;)

If you don't take in anything else from this thread, make sure this is the post you pay attention to the most.

Also, in time, you'll learn that opening one of Gary's links is like a crapshoot! One or two might make your eyes bulge out....and then there's the one you wish you had never clicked on.

A lot of great advice given by some great BOTLs. The only thing I can add is; think of this as a marathon and not a sprint. CohibaSurfer is celebrating year #9 here. Many have 3,4,5 and more years invested in this place. Let it come to you and you'll do fine.

My advice... take a peek at the status bar when you mouse-over a link that's posted... that might save you the trouble of wanting to scrub your eyes with an abrasive cleaner.

Read cigar reviews. There are a number of members here that take some pretty nice pcitures and are quite good with their descriptions. You might find a few threads that might make you wipe your drink off your monitor... the back-to-back ACiD thread comes to mind. Follow some of the pass threads, especially the ones in progress. Those will really open your eyes to what goes on in the event you want to participate in one. The pinned threads in the different forums are usually there for a reason. If you're interested in doing any buys or trades with members here, be upfront and communicate. If you don't keep your end of a bargain or make excuses for not sending your end in a timely fashion it'll probably come to bite you in the ass.

Have fun, tell a joke, and add to the occasional thread. Tasted a new beer? Tell us about it in the saloon. Made some of AVB's blu-bacon dip and served it at a party, and it was a hit? Thank him for it.

You can contribute by sending me a fiver a month for your dues. :p

Nah, but, these guys basically hit it spot on! You'll do fine!

I think you may have already contributed with a question the few of us were smart enough to ask when we joined.

I have a piece of advice that rarely gets pointed out to newcomers. Use the board to find other members in your area. Be proactive, search them out, introduce yourself and get to know them. Eventually (hopefully), you will get together and herf. The relationships will continue pay dividends. One of the coolest things about CigarPass is that it brings together from a variety of backgrounds with a common interest. Enjoy your time here and keep asking good questions.
