Sir Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill died on this date in 1965. His funeral was at the time the largest televised event ever with an estimated 900 million viewers or just under one quarter of the worlds population.
 
I vividly remember his funeral. Sir Winston Churchill is undoubtedly the greatest figure of the 20th century. And BTW, his mother was an American. Interestingly enough, the only thing he didn't like about Americans was that they stopped drinking after dinner. I've tried not to let him down.

The Honorary Citizenship list is awfully short. If I recall correctly, I remember seeing a document, medal, or certificate (I don't remember which one) on display at Chequers.
 
The parents of one of my very good friends had the honor of hosting Sir Winston Churchill while he was in the US for a speaking engagement. To this day my friend keeps the pictures of his parents with Mr. Churchill as one of his most prized possessions. He was truely one of a kind.

My MIL has one. I looked through it, and could only find two pictures of him with a cigar. Fuggin' revisionist historians.
 
One such man, who was granted Honorary Citizenship posthumously in 2009, was Kazimierz Puławski a.k.a The Father of the American Cavalry. There are many Pulaski counties around the country named after him as well as a "General Pulaski Memorial Day" on October 11. On a side note, I think the KKK had its origins in Pulaski County, Tennessee.

Another good Pole that fought for the American revolutionary cause was Tadeusz Kościuszko. He was granted citizenship, land, and men as reward for his service in the war. Jefferson called him one of the truest sons of liberty. Both Kościuszko and Pułaski have their busts outside the old Supreme Court Chambers in the Capitol Building, unless I'm mistaken.

Of course, there is a bunch of stuff named after both of them.
