In the era before "strong" cigars, I hear that there were cigars that had subtle, smooth flavor. Those cigars still exist today, but you won't hear much about them.

Arturo Fuente Hemingway, any size. The first cigar I ever smoked, and still a favorite.
Cusano 18 is a great value cigar around $5, in both the Maduro and Connecticut Shade versions.
