LOL, if you are going to do more hiking you should get yourself a hand-held GPS unit.
I do a fair amount of back country hiking looking for cave entrances.
A good GPS can be invaluable for getting you to the cave and back to the cars again.
I use a punch for everything (except pointy cigars of course).
I find there is no tar build up as long as you use a large enough punch.
I have a number of different sizes, including a really large one that is 12mm in diameter.
Using a small punch on a large ring gauge cigar will cause problems.
