My dream pipe find is any unsmoked estate (previously owned) pipe thats 2 or 3 decades old and selling for a good price on ebay. As I understand it, the most expensive brands age the briar by any of several proprietary means. This cuts down on the bitterness that a new pipe can have. But if...
I mostly smoke blends of any combination of virginias, burleys and perique with some english (latakia) blends also. My favorite blend is from my local B&M shop. It is a flake blend burley, virginia and turkish he buys from a danish manufacturer and then renames to Harvest CutRiegel's Pipes and...
Definitely pipes AND cigars. Once you've been exposed to both of them, who could possibly choose just one? I do go for weeks smoking only pipes, and then smoke only cigars for a while. It's just whatever strikes you at the time. But the best part is, you can choose!
My shipment came in last week while I was out of town on business. My wife was pretty excited when I told her it was all free. She let me be the one to open the box when I got home. As with many of the posters above, I'll like the non-aromatics but will try the aromatics also. Wife will enjoy...
My all-time favorite is Harvest cut, from our local B&M shop (http://www.riegelspipeandtobacco.com/). Other favorites are Rattray's Red Raparee and Hal O' the Wind, Balkan Sasieni, and I am fond of Frog Morton too. Da Vinci is definitely on my list to try.
If you are going to try both aromatic and straight tobaccos, you might want to consider using some of your pipes for only aromatics and others for only straight tobaccos. I even divide the pipes for straight tobaccos into those for blends with latakia and those without.
Go to http://experts.about.com/e/t/to/Tobacco.htm and scroll down to Perique. Very sad that production seems to be down in recent years.
This article http://www.pipes.org/BURST/FORMATTED/215.022.html says nobody wants to make it anymore.
Like you, I like blends that contain perique. The...
[I wish I'd known that a year ago! I've been having a hellva time even keeping mine lit. I'm going to clean it, and try it this way.

Unfortunately, I don't think having a properly broken-in pipe will help it stay lit. I think it will aid in reducing tongue-bite because it will absorb more of...
Beer gets its flavor primarily from two ingredients: malt and hops. The malt gives the smooth and sweet flavors and hops provides the biterness. For the beer newbie, malt is made from barley by spraying it with water, allowing it to germinate, and then drying it in an oven. The various...
The best way to rub out a flake tobacco is between the palms of your hands, held more or less like a person praying, and move your hands in circurlar motions. Allow the crumbled tobacco to fall out onto a sheet of paper below. I enjoy this little added ritual.
I have some MacBaren's Scottish Mixture, and it's pretty nice. Somewhat sweet, and flavored with scotch (or so I've heard). It's not my favorite but I always enjoy it. Hmmm, maybe smoke some when I get home tonight.
