Ok, this is my 1,000 post. So it's time for a contest. The first person to post the correct answer to this simple question wins a 5'er of my present favorite cigar.

When is a cannon a gun?

Good luck,
Doc.

Hmm,

Being the non-military guy I am, I'd say a cannon is mobile either on wheels or treads. A gun is fixed on the vehicle that also carries people. But then you have handguns and long guns so I don't know really.

Wilkey

a canon is ALWAYS a gun cause it shots a projectile. so maybe the trick to the question is "when it shoots a projectile"?

A Canon is any large tubular firearm designed to fire a heavy projectile over a considerable distance. The term can apply to a modern day rifled machine gun with a calibre of 20 mm or more (see autocannon).

Cannon also refers to a large, smooth-bored, muzzle-loading gun used before the advent of breech-loading, rifled guns firing explosive shells. Although a variety of such guns are commonly referred to as "cannon", the term specifically refers to a gun designed to fire a 42 lb shot as opposed to a "Demi-cannon" (32 lb), Culverin (18 lb) or Demi-culverin (9 lb).

damn posted 2 seconds before mine! :(

crap

play on words?
when you use it to shoot people (pictures)
canon (camera)

just a guess.

A cannon is on a ship, a gun is on land. Or is it other way around?

At least it sounds good to me.

a cannon is an automatic firearm of 20mm calibre or above, so a canon becomes a gun when the calibre of the automatic firearm reaches less than 20 mm.

Cannon on land , gun on ship

We have a winner. By the way, my wife got the answer 1st try. You landlubbers should be ashamed of yourselves. :sign:

Twain, you should have your sticks by the first of the week.

Doc.

Damn..I could have got this right off the bat if I wasnt shooting some guns at a range. Oh well...Not like I really need any smokes.

A cannon is an intermediate-sized gun, usually 20mm to 40mm in bore diameter. Cannon are included in the small arms category but are usually vehicle-borne, rather than person-carried. Linky

Unless it's an old Colubus era ship, or did they call them guns at that point as well ? By the way what are your favorite smokes Doc?

not questioning you Doc just curiosity got the best of me on this one
