A “Small” project

Looks good nice DIY project. Gave me some ideas I need space I have a 50 cigar humodor, sad huh.

Now you are talking about plastic do you put it in between the cedar insert and the actual wood right? I wonder if you could use tyvec too? Did you say how you are sealing the doors?

Tyvec could work, I think it's a bit pricey in the rolls they come in, but if you've got it on hand use it. I used the simple 2 mil thick painters plastic between the existing cabinet and the new Lauan, about $20 for a 10' x 100' roll.

Doors are sealed by simple weather stripping. Works great at holding the RH. I would also recommend using door maganets to keep them closed.
 
Regular Tyvek is not a vapor barrier, it will not seal in humidity.

Ok, now I'm sure I speak for everyone on here when I say that we'd like to see all the cigar porn that will go into that cabinet.

Oh yeah, and let us know how the humidity stays in that sweet cabinet (as well as which humidification device you decide to use... or did I miss that in an earlier post?)

Twenty boxes in the Cabinet thus far. Depending on the size of each box I'd say the max storage space would be 25-30. :thumbs:

The RH held pretty steady at 63% for a while and I slowly started adding cigars. Its at 58% right now and climbing as it adjusts to the number of cigars.

I'm using 3/4 of a pound of 65% humidification beads.

Very nice project! This may be a little late, but... you might want to put the singles drawer up top, because especially without an active circulatory system (read: fan) in there, moisture will naturally gravitates towards the bottom of the unit.

Since the singles are presumably cigars that are less protected from the humidity (being outside of boxes), and that you're more likely to pick from the singles drawer to smoke, I think you might find putting the drawer up top might be to your advantage.

Just my two cents, it looks fabulous.

I think I can fix this possibly. I'm going to walmart in the morning and picking up an Oust portable fan and hope that one or two of these might work at moving the air around a bit.

Any thoughts? ???

Funny...I just read the whole thread and was wondering when someone would comment on the singles tray....of course it's Moki! :)

Yes, the oust fan was recommended to me as well. A few people I know who have it, say it does the trick.

It looks friggin' awsome! Very nice job! :thumbs:

So, you said your advice for someone thinking of doing this was to invest in buying one? Not much cheaper and alot more time consuming than buying one, eh?

Naw, it's a whole lot cheaper than buying a new one. I would recommend anyone try this on one scale or another at some point just for the experience.

As for time, I'm fairly young and don't have kids or a wife, so I'm free to work at my own pace which I know can be hard for alot of folks with families.

I had an awesome time building this and just want to extend a hearty thanks to the CP community for all the support and the vast amount of information to learn from within all the old threads. I really hope folks can learn from some of my mistakes and take the plunge into building one of their own. :thumbs:

Oh, I almost forget. I got my Oust fan for $7 and it's working like a champ. I also got tired of looking at that huge bowl of beads and was inspired by Mark's the Puck idea and created a Puck of my own out of an old brick humidifer. :thumbs: I used hot glue to hold in some plastic screening. Two of them hold 1/2 pound of beads.

Quick 2 questions, how did you attach the plastic, and then attach the wooden sheets? Just curious as to the techniques you used...

Staples for the plastic, stainless steel screws for the wood.
 
I got the piece of Spanish cedar today to make the shelf. I transferred all my cigars to my cooler and everything was going fine till I opened the bottom tray and studied the digital hygrometer I’d set in their four days ago. The damn thing was at 54% while the rest of the cabinet was between 61%-64%! All the boxes I’d set in the cabinet blocked those holes I drilled and there was zero airflow into the tray.

You’ve a black heart Moki, I’ll say that much about you. I went ahead and spent the day fabricating a new design layout based upon what you said. God I’m tired, but it’s DONE. . .Finally DONE!!!!!!!!

Now someone send me a bunch of cigars to fill the damned thing. :cool:
