Like what you smoke, smoke what you like
What a week. I was asked to attend a customer meeting in Skaneateles, NY this week and came away with more action items than I could have ever imagined. I was dreading the meetings, but was looking forward to this trip after a BOTL in the area kindly agreed to meet up for a smoke and some poker. Well, the meetings ended and I was finally rewarded with some free time to meet with said BOTL and have a smoke or two.
I met up with him at his office and was treated to a tour of his humidor and I was able to finally see first hand cigars that I had only seen pictures of on the internet. Some very truly rare cigars. Incredible. I feel sorry for the cleaning crew that will have to clean up all the drool that I left behind.
So anyways, we proceeded to drive over to his house and pick up his beautiful wife and then off for some dinner. He took me to a great little Thai restaurant and laughingly told the waitress to make my dish as hot as they could. Wow! What a dish. Burned my mouth, but boy was it tasty. I'm sure I'll pay for it tomorrow morning, but it sure was worth it. What a great meal and even better company.
Following the meal, this BOTL then picked up a few cigars for the poker game. We then made our way to his cigar club. I had brought along a few cigars to smoke, but he when we sat down to light one up, he said that I was uder his mercy for what I would be smoking tonight.
The first cigar that he pulls out was an original release Reserva d'Chateau from 1995 which he handed over to me to light up. OMG! What an astoundig cigar. It was perfectly constructed with a beautiful shiny sheen to its wrapper and it was in a cellophane wrap that was so yellowed by time. The cigar smoked beautifully. Probably one of the 3 best cigars that I have ever smoked. It was incredibly smooth with a plethora of subtle flavors. This is the perfect personification of what age can do to a great cigar. The cigar just got better and better. No bitterness whatsoever and developed so many nuances of flavors that it would just bore you to death for me to describe them. The ending of this cigar was heavenly. That Opus spicyness developed slowly over the last third of the cigar. I nubbed the sucker to get all that I can from the cigar.
Then came the second cigar that he handed to me during the poker game. He gave me a Don Arturo Destino al Siglo "13" . Again, a beautifully constructed cigar. You can read all about this cigar from the link above. Smoking this cigar was an eye opener. Never have I had a Fuente that tasted like this. It had hints of cinnamon, vanilla, black cherry, and chocolate. Incredible! It was like smoking a very rich dessert. Again, no bitterness or harshness and straight burn throughout the smoke. Of course, this cigar was also nubbed.
What an incredible night. In one session, I smoked 2 of the top 5 cigars that I have ever had in my life. All thanks to the generosity of this BOTL. I had a great time spending time with him and his friends over a friendly game of poker. To top it all off, he even worked it out with his crew to allow me to win a few hands just to boost my ego.
Andrew, Thank You for an incredible night. I thoroughly enjoyed you and your lovely wife's company. Make sure you make plans to visit Tucson in the near future. I can only hope to be half the host you were. Please thank Polly again for taking the time to have dinner with us. I can't thank you enough for dinner and the time that you took out of your busy schedule to meet up...oh, and cigars weren't bad either.
