A Lesson for those that are Somewhat New to Cigars

Yesturday was a beautiful day. I had an excellent book that I was going to work on reading and I figured a fine cigar would complement it. I pulled one of my Rocky Patel Vintage '92 Figurados out of my humidor, ready and excited to light up. However, I wasn't really sure how to light it. I'd had this particular cigar before, but not in this size or shape. I had just purchased a small box of these a week or so ago. Not to metion, they're pretty expensive and hard to come by for a younger man myself.

So, I went with instinct and uncertainty. I cut the one end with the my cutter and put it to my mouth. I didn't think anything of it. Then I set it down and began the toasting process. However, I didn't cut the other end which is where I was supposed to cut, and actually stick in my mouth! Here I was burning it. I thought that the small end, would just catch around the cigar as it burned and give me a perfect ash. So, I was smoking through the end that was supposed to be lit and burning from the end that I was supposed to have in my mouth. Within a few minutes I realized this wasn't as good as the RP '92's I had previously. Something was wrong. So, I went on the internet and found a quick clip at CigarAfficionado.com on how to cut a cigar. Then it hit me. I had a ruined cigar and the shame of doing a dumb thing. I've been smoking for more than a year and I'm still a huge newb as this clearly proves it.

So, fellow newbs, please learn from my mistakes. If you're unsure on how to light or cut a particular cigar, or just a normal perejo please consult a link like this one: Cigar Afficionado Videos, send a private message to a member who knows what they're doing, or do a Google search on it. It wouldn't hurt either to have a beginners book on cigars, as these are highly affective at learning a wealth of general knowledge at a beginning level.

I'm sure you guys can vouch and agree that this kind of thing has happened before to you. I can't be the only one. Photos are included below.

I might just have to get more of those simple Java perejos that I like. :D

even for cutting the wrong end you damn near halved it, those perfecto's are short enough as it is.

I too have lit the wrong end of a cigar once, a La Aurora preferido, I do have extreme intoxication and topless girls making out to distract me as well.

ya live ya learn, at least it was just an RP ;)

Dayam! Looks like the tobacco beaver did a tap dance on your cigar.

As penance, smoke three Swishers and a Grape White Owl Blunt.

Don't feel bad. You should see me light a cigar with a torch lighter....I think I'll just stick to matches.

Well, I didn't do that initially. When I realized what I'd done I figured I could maybe save it. So I kept on cutting to see if I could re do it. But There was no way. :(

Wow, what a mess. At least you've got the rest of the box to practice on! :D

You learned a good lesson and provided good advice for others, though... If you have any questions, most likely the answer can be easily found here or elsewhere on the web. If not, just ask!

What I like the most about this, is the fact that Coin is not afraid to post his mistake so someone else can learn from it. Thanks a lot. Out there somewhere is a noob waiting to read this post and catch themselves before they ruin their Dutch Master.

Really, thanks for sharing

Tim

It takes a man to admit he's wrong..... but only an idiot would tell the world. LOL  No really.... bwaaaahahahaha! :sign: :sign:

Just poking fun so don't give it another thought. I can't recall who it was but someone here tried to smoke a cigar with the cedar sleeve still on it. Kudo's to you for feeling comfortable enough to post that and actually take pictures.
