Yesturday was a beautiful day. I had an excellent book that I was going to work on reading and I figured a fine cigar would complement it. I pulled one of my Rocky Patel Vintage '92 Figurados out of my humidor, ready and excited to light up. However, I wasn't really sure how to light it. I'd had this particular cigar before, but not in this size or shape. I had just purchased a small box of these a week or so ago. Not to metion, they're pretty expensive and hard to come by for a younger man myself.
So, I went with instinct and uncertainty. I cut the one end with the my cutter and put it to my mouth. I didn't think anything of it. Then I set it down and began the toasting process. However, I didn't cut the other end which is where I was supposed to cut, and actually stick in my mouth! Here I was burning it. I thought that the small end, would just catch around the cigar as it burned and give me a perfect ash. So, I was smoking through the end that was supposed to be lit and burning from the end that I was supposed to have in my mouth. Within a few minutes I realized this wasn't as good as the RP '92's I had previously. Something was wrong. So, I went on the internet and found a quick clip at CigarAfficionado.com on how to cut a cigar. Then it hit me. I had a ruined cigar and the shame of doing a dumb thing. I've been smoking for more than a year and I'm still a huge newb as this clearly proves it.
So, fellow newbs, please learn from my mistakes. If you're unsure on how to light or cut a particular cigar, or just a normal perejo please consult a link like this one: Cigar Afficionado Videos, send a private message to a member who knows what they're doing, or do a Google search on it. It wouldn't hurt either to have a beginners book on cigars, as these are highly affective at learning a wealth of general knowledge at a beginning level.
I'm sure you guys can vouch and agree that this kind of thing has happened before to you. I can't be the only one. Photos are included below.
I might just have to get more of those simple Java perejos that I like.
