A Rant About Hypocrisy

Let me first please note that this is not a rant directly about Cross Border Shopping (a hot topic now with the strength of the Canadian Dollar), but instead, a rant about individuals I class as “sincere hypocrites” (there’s an oxymoron for ya).

Wiki says “Hypocrisy” is “the act of condemning or calling for the condemnation of another person when the critic is guilty of the act for which he demands that the accused be condemned.”

Note that while I may not agree with someone’s Political or Religious (or any subject) opinions and views, I have a great deal of respect for anyone who lives by their beliefs.

Anyway, this being an automotive area regarding employment, it’s a big thing about buying North American built vehicles (as I know it is in the US). Very often you’ll see cars with bumper stickers that say:

Out of a job yet?
Keep buying foreign!!

Well, Saturday afternoon we went to the Detroit ‘Burbs to do some grocery shopping and the Bride wanted to check a few clothing stores for sales too. As we’re in line to go through US Immigration, directly in front of us was a spankin’ new Dodge mini-van (looked like mom & dad and 3 kids inside) bearing the above mentioned bumper sticker, and 2 more stickers; one for the Flyers and one for the Avalanche. I figured and thought to myself “Look at this fugger sporting that sticker and going shopping n the States” but knowing how many here in the area have family and friends in Detroit, I thought nothing more of it.

We went on our merry way and spent the afternoon shopping as planned, had dinner and basically took our time getting back. After we came back across the Border to Windsor, The Bride remembers she needs some paper towels, toilet paper and cleaning / laundry supplies, so she asks me to take a detour to Wallymart.

I drop her off at the door and go find a place to park. I park next to a mini-van, and lo and behold, the vehicle is bearing the same 3 stickers as the van described above, in the same places, and it’s the same colour van. I get out of the car and take a gander inside, and it’s chock full of bags from Target (none in Canada), Krogers (same, none this side) and JC Penny (ditto). So, safe assumption that it’s the exact vehicle I was behind at the border, right??

Well, as we say where I come from, I got right fuggin twisted. Here’s this asswipe showing off a sticker on his vehicle about not buying foreign, and his whole day of shopping was either in the United States, or at Walmart (and we all know where most of their products come from).

WTF is with people like this?? You have this guy, who "could possibly" be an Auto Worker in the very plant where his vehicle was made, who wants everyone to buy North American vehicles so he can keep his job, and then proceedes to but anywhere else but Canadian products, so he obviously isn't worried about anyone elses job.

Thanks for letting me vent!!!
Next time you see these people, thank them for me, the weaker dollar is working. :)

snip.....
I do try to buy as many products that are manufactured here but it is getting harder every day.

I feel the same, but as examples; milk here is ~ $3.99 for 4 L, and at Krogers in Detroit I can get it for 2 gal for $5, I eat quite a bit of granola and here in Canada it's $4+ a box, and again at Krogers, it's often on sale for 2 boxes (bigger and heavier boxes) for $4, a magazine is $5.95 here and $3.95 at the 'same chain" in Detroit.

While the weak US dollar is awesome for us who shop across the border, it's bad bad bad for the company I work for. All our materials & services & labour is paid in Canadian, and the vast majority of what we produce is sold in the US. 6 years ago when we gad a 65% exchange rate, it was awesome, but now, with the exchange rate in the negative numbers, we're hurtin'.

As for you guys trying to figure what we make in Canada, jeeeeeeeeeeeeeezuz, don't ya know nuttin'??? We make ice cubes and igloos. :sign:

...it's still foreign.

What IS made in Canada?

Maple syrup and poutine.

AND Bacon :D

She alone makes up any shortcomings that all of Canada might have.

mmmmmmmm....bacon!

I was thinking more along the lines of PORK! I a flat second!

Don't worry about the trade defficate Jim. I personally know several people who buy Windsor Canadian Whiskey like you buy granola. If i were you, i'd get some stock. These guys could float your entire economy on the money spent on your whiskey.

I agree with you Newfie, this guy is a first class hypocrite, plain and simple. Not only that, he's not too bright if he thinks that "buying foreign" has anything to do with whether or not he has a "job."

We can debate the stupidity of the statement on his bumper sticker until the cows come home (because that statement is indeed ignorant and stupid) BUT Newfie's right, if the guy feels so damned strongly about his ignorance, he should practice what he preaches and NOT "buy foreign."

Newfie's story reminds me of something I used to see in eastern Connecticut in the 1970s. There was a proposal to build and interstate highway between Hartford, CT and Providence, RI and it would have been Interstate 84. They built a few sections of it in eastern Connecticut around Manchester and Willimantic. There was a group of nut-crunching, tree-hugging, NIMBY liberals who started an organization called "STOP I-84" and they all proudly sported their bumper stickers on their Saabs, Volvos and VW Bugs. What highway do you think you could find the most cars with these bumper stickers on?

You guessed it I-84!

Hey, if you think the highway is such a bad idea and you're openly promoting blocking construction of it then use the existing, over-crowded, inadequate state highways and don't be hypocrites you fuggen scumbags.
