Greetings! The English language is chock-full of absurd phrases. Here are a couple of examples: "I almost fell down!" Have you ever known of anyone that "fell up"? Or, at the neighborhood gas station: "Fill 'er up!" Heck no, man. I want my gas tank to be "filled down". Please tell us about any absurd phrases that you know of. Regards, knightlaird

The one that bugs me is "Turn a phrase". It is very trite, and I have been hearing it more often, lately.

The other one that I think is absurd is "Touch base with you(him/it/etc..)".

Hi, Nobel! Yes, I agree with you on this one. I have noticed that the absurd phrase of "Touch base with you" is most often used by sales representatives of all kinds. Actually, this phrase has been over-used so much, that it is now worn into the ground. Have a great week, Nobel! Regards, knightlaird

"Who pissed in your Wheaties"
Hi, gandolf565! Other variations of this phrase include "Who pissed in your Post Toasties?", and "Who pissed in your cornflakes?". My guess is that these phrases probably originated in America's Rural Heartland. Just a hunch. Have a great week, gandolf565! Regards, knightlaird

See Yogi Berra:

If you come to a fork in the road, take it.
In theory there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice there is.
A nickel ain't worth a dime anymore.
I never said most of the things I said.

It's "turn of phrase" and I actually like it.

I often compliment people when they string together an eloquent response, with "that was a very nice turn of phrase."

One pet peeve of mine is when someone says "I could care less", when what they really mean, "I couldn't care less".

A new Budwiser commerical claims that the hops they use are, "picked straight from the vine". Wow! You mean they didn't pick them from the back seat of a Chevy?

The most absurd thing I've ever heard was when a guy said to me: "I was shot almost 5 times."

I almost fell down laughing.

actually, i think its the opposite. saying "i could careless" about this topic means i dont care about it and as time goes by i will be even less intrested. saying "i couldnt care less" means at some point in time i might actually start caring, which is not the case.

" To be honest with you", as opposed to not being honest the whole time we have been speaking. i walked on a best buy employee from a 3k sale due to that phrase
that one always "gets my goat"...another absurd phrase... :whistling:

The image the Bud statement puts in my head is of a factory/plantation hybrid (or indoor plantation), where the employee can just turn around and pick them off the vine and toss them in, like some sort of Willy Wonka madhouse. :D

Definitely absurb ;)

I don't know what's more absurd, the fact that you randomly brought this up so inappropriately, or that you actually misspelled the word "absurd!"

LOL!

Oh no it wasn't randomly brought up ;) May'be one day you'll see your stupidity and come to grips with it. Or may'be you already have ???

how about the "phrase du jour", or the popular buzzword kind of thing that seems to make the rounds for a couple of months then fades away...
My biggest peeve is the phrase "at the end of the day" being used for EVERYTHING lately.
Also, on a lot of tv shows, I've noticed people saying something like "I'm going for coffee, you wanna go with?" Do I wanna go with... WHAT? WHO?
Makes my teeth hurt....
