I've always liked Acura, never owned one, but driven several. For the Acura owners out there, what do you think of the TL series? Specifically the Type-S. How's the overall power/performance? Would like to hear your thoughts...

Thanks.

New or older model?

I have a friend with the type-s. She and I have taken many trips in it...be careful of transmission issues....she's on the 4th one!
No - she's not a street racer or heavy on the pedal....it's a probelm with the tranny's that Acura doesn't want to fess up too.
I think it's a 2 to 3 gear lubrication issue...a lot of forums have more info.

Also - a lot of guys have rotor warp...I'd upgrade the breaks!

Other than that...it's a sweet FUN comfy (and I'm 6'5') ride!!!

As far as the new style...she doesn't really like the interior as much...she thinks it's not as well made.

Let me know if you have any other specific questions.

My parents had 3 TL's over the last 9 years and just got the MDX. They swear by Acura and have not had one service issue in those 9 years.

Acura has the highest resale value of any production car made. I am a big Honda/Acura fan.

My wife drives a CL (the two door version of the TL). We have had it for 4 years now, and the only problem we have ever had was a light bulb on the dash going out. It has a great ride, good power, and a boat load of features. We are near the point where trading in for a four door is near, and with over 120k on our CL, the dealership is still offering over $7k for trade in allowance. Not too bad for a 5 model year old car with that many miles on it.

The Acura usually tend to lose out to the Euro cars due to the fact that they are front wheel drive. One of the biggest digs on the Acura is that they put too much power to the front wheels.

My wife loves hers, and she is hooked for life. Just my $.02 worth.

It looks like the TL - S starts around $38000. Which is the same price you could get a 3-series or C Class for, and I know that both of those cars rock. You could also get a Volvo S60T for around that same money too I believe. But if you're into Acura's then go for it, whatever floats your boat.

I would imagine though that the TL probably has a higher theft rate, with all those punk ricers out there trying to get them and trick them out.

You ever see the South Park episode where Satan has his birthday party on earth and is supposed to get a full sized ferrari cake but his minions screw up and he has to settle for an Acura cake?

I love his reaction.

"An Acura? NO!!!!"

"It's supposed to be a Ferrari cake not a F%#king Acura!!!!."

Oh, yeah on to the question. I hear good things about acuras.

Rod, my sister drives one that's ~4 years old. It's a blast to drive, nice stiff clutch, short throw on the shift, excellent steering, power to spare for such a small engine, etc.

However, maintenance bills are killing her. A brake job was $1500, she's had the tranny done once (someone else mentioned that too), light bulbs are replaced on a semi-annual basis and there's always some little Whizgiggin or a Doo-Dad broken somewhere and needs fixing.

If I had to make a decisioin from hers, I'd say stay away from 'em, and I'd agree with Bill, go European for Luxury/Sport. She's also had a Beemer 3**i (don't remember the engine) and a Jetta, both of which were much better vehicles (IMHO).

The first 5 years or 50,000 miles (I'm not sure on the mileage) worth of standard service is free on the BMW's as well.

I think they are pretty hot looking... i don't know much about them other then being Honda made and Hondas are pretty damn reliable.

I work on a lot of different foreign and domestic makes of automoblies. Most of them going to private dealer auctions.
It seems that in the Acura line, the most common I see is the TL's and the MDX's. When it comes to these two your either going to be really happy or, end up like the rest of the poor souls that had the ones that I see going to auction. The powertrains are excellent but, I see ones that seem to be stricken with varoius electrical gremlins like automatic climate control, OBD II ghost, instrumentation problems, etc...
If you are buying new, spring for the extended warranty and you will be good.
I am not sure what Toyota has to offer that is sporty but, they are by far the most reliable I have ever seen. Heck, I bought one this year because after working on everyone elses I do not want to work on my own. Lexus is even better. They are Toyotas elite line. Hate to disagree with Burnt Tounge but, I think Toyotas have the best resale track record.
