I went to turn on itunes and play some music while cleaning today and the whole library is gone. Playlists, albums, artists everything. It's like I never had any music. Weird thing is that the library shows all the files but they don't show up in itunes. They were there one day and gone the next. Any idea what happened and how do I get it to see the music files and folders again?
Thanks for the help.

windows or mac.

Generally what happens is the playlist file gets corrupted. What you have to do is move all of the files from the itunes folder and then move it back after you delete the itunes file. I can tell you which files (where) based on operating system.

This should help:

Press and hold on the shift key then open Itunes , the menu will ask you to create new library , follow this , it will sort it out your problem

I believe the default folder is in my documents > my music

It worked!!!!!!!!!!! I found several "old" libraries and picked the newest old one. Thanks a million, I don't know what happened, thanks for the help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay, now it shows all the music but says that it can't be found do you want to search for it. Two things have happened. 1) I found 2 albums and transferred them in, now it shows a total of 3 of each song in each of those albums. 2) it appears that almost all of the files show but aren't found when you try to play them.

Is it possible to delete all the libraries and music files and have my Ipod transfer all of it's content to the computer. When you look at the music files the mess that has been made of them is totally overwhelming. There are duplicates of almost every album on the hard drive.

There are programs out there that will, for free, delete duplicate itunes files.
Google "free itunes duplicates windows"

Good luck!

Looks like I'm going to switch to a different computer. Can I have all the stuff on the Ipod transferred to the new Itunes? If so how? Thanks a bunch!

If it is PC to Mac, I can personally say NO. I got a Mac for V-day and went to sync my iPod and it erased everything. Luckily, I had not cleared out my PC yet, so I did a back up and then loaded the back up on my Mac. Worked perfectly. Depending on your iPod size, you might run into the problem of something to move the back up on. You can back it up to CD-Rs, but if I had just backed up my iTunes to regular CD-Rs, it would have been 12 discs. I used DVD-Rs and only had to use 4. If you have a big enough external hard drive, I recommend using that.

Also there are programs that will rip music off of the iPod and you could reload it all like that, but I've never used those programs, so I do not have any to recommend. Good luck.
