We've been in the process of buying a house for the last couple months and finally met with a mortgage broker the other day. Our credit report came back with 10 or so credit cards/loans/etc that weren't ours. Most of them were my brother's who has almost the same SSN as me. So I've spent all morning calling all these lenders trying to get letters saying that we don't have accounts with them, what a pain in the ass.

Have any of you guys ever had to deal with this?

yes, happened to me...my dads name is same as mine, except middle inital is different. spent a few days doing what you did. mortgage people are pains in the arse anyway.

My wife's credit report showed a tax lien of $100k on it for some property tax on land out in BFE. Apparently the guy who owned it's social was 1 digit different and the clerk who entered it fat fingered it. It was a real PITA to clear it up too.

They could not believe it was may father's credit when I showed them that it was opened up four years beforeI was born.

My wife however had someone in Miami use her maiden name and SS# to open an account and charge a $12000 bill with American Express and left a $400 phone bill. We never knew until the collection agency started calling us. (Just as we were looking to move)

It took us several hours of trouble to have this cleared up. Luckily she had an AMEX account of her own.

If you ever need to have something like this cleared up, Go to the company that has the delinquent bill and explain to them about the fraud. Don't bother wasting your time with the collection agency. Then clear it up and have them remove it from the credit report. Damn reporting agencies and their phone lines too. You'll never get anything done by trying to go through them either.

Nah, that never happens in Miami.

Thankfully though, I've never had any such experiences.

This is a good demonstration of why it's so important to check your credit report. You can do it for free HERE. You can get a report from each of the 3 reporting agencies once annually.

We do one every 4 months just to keep an eye on things, but you can do them all at the same time. In this day of identity theft and fraud, it is very important to stay on top of this stuff. It can save you a world of headaches if you catch it earlier than later.
