Anyone Had Deviated Septum Surgery?

Okay so I forgot the technical term :p I have a bad deviated septum in my right nostral and my left one isn't so bad. Has anyone had the surgery to correct it? I'm mainly concerned about if I'm going to be black & blue (bruised up) from the surgery or not? I'd hate to start school and look like a freak that got pummelled in the alley  Any comments?

I think the technical term you are looking for is Deviated Rectum. It occurs when the Rectum is knocked off course by repeated...Oh wait, no you're right, it is septum.

My bad.

Actually, a buddy teacher of mine had this a few years back. I'll ask him tomorrow about any bruising. I do remember him having to put some white powdery substance on it for a while. Needless to say there were some jokes along those lines. As well as the deviated rectum.

I've had it done twice. The first time wasn't too bad but in my case it involved re-breaking my nose to fix it. I did look like I was on the loosing end of a fight with 2 black eyes and the packing up each nostril and the bandage across the face. The second time (5 years later) was much worse because I got an infection behind my left eye. They said they couldn't use any anesthetic when they drained it so 3 orderlies held me down, one holding my head, and one on each arm. The doc went in with an empty hypodermic needle into my tear duct and sucked out all sorts of crap. I bent the bed rails I was holding onto, broke out into a drenching sweat and generally didn’t enjoy myself. After being shot that hurt the second worst in my life. That was very unusual but things like that can happen just so you know.

Makes me wanna go right on in and have it done myself! :0

My wife has had it done 3 times...yes, THREE. And then years later when I got to know her...they had to go and remove some pollips. She said it was the worst thing ever...but on a good note she got a free nose job while they were at it...took a little off the front and gave her a little more arch. So good and bad...but she said it hurt like $hit. I don't want one...

had the d.s. surgery about 4 months ago, the only problem i had with the whole procedure, was waiting for the day after surgery to have the packing in my nose removed. could'nt breath right for as long as i can remember, now it's great. if you can't beath correctly, do yourself a favor and have it done! the harm that that happens to your body from not getting enough oxygen while you sleep is tremendous. high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, etc. go to a good sleep specialist. turned my life around!

I had mine done in 1996 and I looked like I ran into a train. I had major nose troubles for years prior and afterwards, I was good to go. They did some major reconstruction since my nose was broken a few times after a few bar fights, LOL. All I can tell you is the day they take out the packing, make sure that you ask for some pain killers prior cause it's like taking a golf ball through a garden hose...... :D  :p

This was the first surgery that I ever had and it was 3 years ago, along with sinus re-construction. I had 80% blockage on one side since the septum was deviated so bad, it got so bad with all the sinus pressure that it was beginning to disturb the roots and nerves of my top two front teeth. Almost had root canals, damn glad I missed that. The difference in the ability to breath before and after surgery was night and day. I didn't have much swelling or bruising.

Any way, if the surgeon goes by the newer laser method there generally will not be packing, unless you bleed a lot. If you don't have to get packed the most inconveniencing part is doing the saline solution cleanouts 3 - 4 times a day.

Hope the Doc explained that the septum will deviate some on its own after it has healed. I sneeze more now than I ever used to but I can breath.

my father-in-law had it done last year, he said it was no biggy, just coulnd't blow his nose for a few days. very little pain invloved, then again, he was on some serious pain killers!

Save your money for cigar
Here's what you do
just go up to some big guy in a bar
tell him his old lady is good in the sack
and then stand still with your face turned the right way
you wake up with a new nose (and maybe face)
costs nothing.

Thanks for the info. guys. My Doc never really said anything about breaking my nose. He just said he would make an incision on the inside part of my nose in the middle and take away some stuff. The surgery I'm talking about is Septoplasty. Thank God for technology! I don't want them to break my nose!

Ahhh, different thing. I was talking about rhinoplasty.

Doesn't seem too bad:

He will be removing some of the turbinates or cutting them and doing something. Hell I forgot

More than likely reducing them. The doc cut away some of mine as well, all I can say is get ready to sneeze more, the turbinates are what trigger you to sneeze and now that you will be able to breath, well, just get ready to sneeze.

Hmmmm...Not being able to breathe regularly through your nose or sneezing more? Kind of a hard decision there. I guess I'll be blessed more due to the increased sneezing...Get it? HAH!
