Strength train? Lift? I'm trying to gain some mass and such, but I just can't seem to resist eating fast food when I'm hungry and it's late at night. Anyone have any tips besides going to sleep or drinking water? What's healthy AND tastes good? ???

I work out almost every day doing either cardio or weight lifting. Nothing major on the weights, I just have some adjustable dumbells that adjust from 5-45 lbs. They're all I need for working my upper body. I really don't have time to go the gym, so I do most of my running either outside on on my treadmill. I hate running, but I don't want to get all fat again like I was last year. As a matter of fact, I just finished a nice morning smoke and now I'm off to run around the block. good luck! :)

As Winston Churchill once said when asked," No, but I do get some when serving as pallbearer for those friends that do".

If you're looking for something sweet to eat late ate night - granola + berries + honey + plain yogurt.

Try cooking an extra portion of dinner, so, if you had grilled chicken breasts for dinner leave one in your fridge and if you get hungry, warm it up and eat that.

Yep. Not sure what your diet is during the day but make sure you are consuming enough so you are not too hungry at night. If you are looking to gain mass enough carbs is as important as protien intake.

I drink protien shakes at night as a snack when I'm hungry. Or, some low fat cottage cheese with a little fruit such as apples in it.

If you're lifting for gain then you should be pushing your muscles to failure (go until you can't go any more). That means you need extra protein to help repair the torn muscle fibers. To help with hunger, you might try eating 6 small meals a day instead of your normal 3, but limit portion sizes accordingly. I have found that 7am, 10, noon, 3pm, 5 and 7 work best for me.

To help with muscle repair/growth, I drink a whey protein replacement shake/drink at the 10am, 3pm and 7pm meals. It's a powder that comes in a gallon-size container and you can get it at just about any health food place. Just mix with milk and you're good to go. I think Costco even carries it.

A good book that explains the meal schedule and the muscle repair needs is "Body for Life". It also discusses a twelve-week program for losing weight and building body mass through weight traing. But I'd stay away from that unless you need to get in shape initially. If you're thin and just want to build mass, just read up on the concepts.

Hope this helps.

Berries and plain yogurt always a great late night snack. Rent the movie "Supersize Me" and it will cure your fast food temptations

What stevehawk said, but let me add this...You need to be prepared to eat. If you push comes to shove you will make bad choices, at least I do. The easier it is to follow your plan, the more likely you will. I'm a late evening snacker as well, I've found cereal with low fat milk to be a good replacement for my bad sweets (some times with yogurt instead of milk yogurt). I use almonds when I want savory (I sprinkle them with Emeril's seasoning). I also have a rice cooker. If the savory carb craving comes up, I make rice with olive oil, garlic and toasted almonds. Just remember portion control and to make sure each meal contains carb, fat & protein.

If you are looking to curb a sweet tooth at night, try sugar free jello with a little whipcream on top. It usually is enough to curb my appetite. No fat, and hardly any carbs to store while you sleep. Pretty much an "empty" snack.

Sorry I wasn't specific enough. I'm not much of a sweets guy. I do enjoy it but won't crave it. Late night snacks = a meal to me. For example, last night, I was really hungry after dinner. I had a boca burger (0.5g fat / 13 g protein per serving) at 7pm. Then I got hungry around 10pm and ate a tuna sandwich, a bowl of spaghetti, a banana, can of green beans, and more tuna. I was still hungry after that. My friends went to Wendys at about 12am and ordered food. I resisted, came home, and just went to sleep instead.

I was so close to ordering my ususal: jr. bacon cheeseburger, chicken nuggets, chili, and jr. cheeseburger delux. that meal in itself is approx 1500 calories. I guess I had A LITTLE self control last night. But it was a close call.

edit: so as you can see, those little snacks do little to nothing to me to surpress my hunger.

Hmmm, I also usually keep some pre-cooked skinless chicken breasts in the freezer. I dont remember the brand, but they are like $8.00 a bag at the grocery store, they are grilled, and only take 2 minutes per side to cook in the microwave.

If I am really hungry at night, those usually satisfy me. Look in the frozen section next to the chicken strips and popcorn chicken stuff. Lots of protein, and little fat. Before when I was working out everyday, I used to eat about three of them a day.

Gee, when did cows start giving fat free cream? :whistling:

Doc.

I use the government whipcream. You know the stuff in the squirty can with no nutritional value what so ever....99.9% all natural chemicaly derived substitute! :D

Bill
Just FYI, the people who make the chemicals that go into that shit,Monsanto, are the same people who made Agent Orange.
