I used to play darts a heck of a lot in high school and college. I was never competitive in tournaments BUT my claim to fame was in 1992, I was playing darts (cricket) with a guy and kicked his a$$ in every game. About the fifteeth or so game we played that day, he only had to shoot one "cork" (a single bullseye) to win, I had to shoot five.

It was my turn and I shot three straight double bullseyes to win :0 :0 :0 I had never done that before in my life and never have since.

MAN was he pi$$ed :D

Bill,

I used to play in a couple of leagues when I lived up north.

Steel tip only, none of that sissy soft tip. If you can't draw blood, it ain't worth playing.

I did get a T180 patch, one time.

I've got a set of decent darts stashed away somewhere. I don't think there is a dartboard in any bar within 20 miles of me though so I'm way out of practice, not that I was much good to begin with.

The shop Gator and I go to has an electric dart board with the soft tip. We used to play a lot when they first got it. Haven't played much since.

My favorite game was when I shut him out playing cricket or was it the time I scored over 600 points, no wait, definitely the shut out.

I have a pretty good Bristle Board and 6 or 8 "decent" sets of Darts. One 18 gram set I customized personally with short shafts, shortened tips and custom made Taz flights.

I love to play 301 as well as Cricket. But I have not thrown in about a year I guess. Nobody here to throw with, and it ain't the same without sharing a few pints and some good cigars.

I got my ass handed to me by Ric and Jorge while at the "office" last year :(

Steel tip is the game in Asia. Actually I saw my first soft tip board (in teh 6 years I've been outside the US) this last trip to Korea. I played in some leagues while I was stationed on the RoK, but not since. I only get to throw while TDY, since most bars in Oki don't have darts (and are to expensive to hang in for a night).

I've Hood'ed a Double Bull before (Maybe I'll scan the pic and load it up) and got a few T80s (T80 not T180 - the Ton is the 100), since 20 is my best number (cultivated for the Double in / out for 301 / 501.)

My favorite game though is Shanghai. For those that don't know what it is, it's similar to British Cricket (which is reg cricket plus Doubles and Triples) but you add Beds. A bed is three darts in the same number (eg: First up you throw 3 20s - you can close 20s or mark 1 bed, not both) the game adds a whole new dimension of strategy to darts, espicially when playing Call with Points.

-K-

Oh, my "cool" darts are the Bottlesen Dart Company's "Hammerhead" darts (#2241) with the retractable point. The theory is that they are less likely to bounce when the hit the wires. It does help but every now and then, these bounce too :( . WOW, now that I think about it, I bought these with some money my aunt gave me when I graduated from college :0 :0 :0

OMG that was in 1984 OUCH

OK, OK, I'll be the first wienie to admit playing predominantly soft tip darts here in Hawaii. For a while, a few years back, EVERY bar had at least 3 dart boards, and leagues were very popular. A lot of the popularity here, I believe, is due to the fact that the board keeps track of the score for you, so you can be piss blind drunk and still play and have a good time. I can't imagine keeping score with 4 drunk guys playing cricket.

Ah, well, it's a plastic board riddled with holes, in which the soft tippped(plastic tipped) dart sticks into. Under the board are sensors which alerts the computer in the machine which area of the board was hit, ie bulls, double bulls, 20, double 20, etc. It also has a bunch of games, like cricket, cut throat cricket, 501, 301, etc. The beauty of the thing is that once you choose the game, it keeps score for you automatically, so you don't have to worry about keeping score. Hmm, maybe your should invest in a few and open up a bar. I swear these things took Honolulu by storm, and EVERYONE was playing darts.

Ah that sounds freakin' LOUSY :(

Darts are a very "personal" item, you want the right weight, diameter, barrel finish, etc. to fit your style, kinda like golf clubs (not that I'd know 'cause I hate golf but so I hear). Not that my dart game is that good to begin with but when I don't use my own darts, my game is considerably worse.

Soft Tip darts are just as personalized - much much lighter. I play a 32 gram steel tip (too cheap for the tungsten) but back in detroit I used to play with 17 gram soft tips.

As for soft tip....the games aren't bad, but the variety just isn't there for the soft tip. For example, depending on who I am playing my cricket game may be Brit or US; Slop, Order or Call; Points or Straight.... that's twelve different cricket games alone... then there are 'Round the World, Killer, Cutthroat, Shanghai, 301, 501, 1001 etc. (and that's not mentioning all the variants of those games). Most Electronic soft tips give you four or six options. Cool for a quick game, but since I switched to steel tip, I definitely don't plan on going back.

Ya know, I've actually never even seen nor heard of these "soft tip" boards you guys are talking about ???

WTF.... haven't you been in a tavern over the last ten years or so??? :0

Oh I definately have, the question is, which bars in New England have I NOT been in over the last ten years :D

They don't have those around here. There are a few bars that have regular dart boards but I've never seen these soft tip ones you guys are talking about. ???

A real Tavern would never have those soft tips boards in them. ;)

Its been a while but I could prob knock off some of the rust and hold my own with most people. Played league for several years. Most people that can throw darts also do well in bowling, horseshoes, and washers.

Now if you want to throw some shoes let me know.....

OK, well in Illinois you can't go into a club or bar without tripping over at least a half dozen dart machines. The leagues for these things are huge in Illinois. The pool room I worked for, years ago, had about a dozen or so dart machines and they were full every night and had waiting lists. We sold dart sets (soft tip) for anywhere from $10-$75 a set. These things generate a ton of money for the amusment businesses around here. I remember going into one place that had a room the size of a bedroom full of bags and rolls of quarters. When I say full, I mean full as in they just had a small walkway that you could get tot he back of the room through. Those people all went to jail on some tax charges though.... LMAO!

well I hate to dig up an old thread but I was just wondering if anyone still played darts. I used to play a lot but I don't play so much anymore. I still throw a few every once and a while when I get bored, but I haven't played an actual game in forever.

I think the nicest pair of darts I ever owned were a crappy set of brass barrel darts I got for 12 bucks at walmart haha. Never cared for the soft tip darts...
