I see these moderately priced cigars at the local shops, anyone care to comment on these brand so i dont have to find out the hard way if its a waste of $

Ramon Allones
Colita
Henry Clay
Don Tomas
Saint Luis Rey
Don Diego
Juan Lopez
Puros Indios
Sancho Panza

Well, taste in cigars is a matter of personal opinion. But, for what it's worth, I enjoy Ramon Allones and Sancho Panzas. I haven't had much experience with the other brands you listed. If you're looking for a good mid-priced smoke, I'd suggest an Excalibur 1066.

Ramon Allones: mild, but not bad
Colita: Never heard of this one
Henry Clay: an old standby. I hear the newer H2000 aren't as good as the old blend. Medium bodied, nice smoke
Don Tomas: the Astrals are nice; not to my liking, but nice. Dominican Selection also OK
Saint Luis Rey: ehhhh
Don Diego: another ehhh
Juan Lopez: Never had one
Puros Indios: mild, depending on the line, up to medium. OK, doesn't float my boat.
Sancho Panza: the Quixote is a very nice stick. Look for the maduro wrapper.

Step back in to the NST, Dave. If you're willing to spend the money at your local shop, you won't go wrong doing a trade with one of the regulars for the same amount. :D

ICKY?

rotflmao!!!!!

.. ahmmmm.... sorry....

LOL!

..... ahmmmm ... really ...

ROTFLMAO!

I think most of those brands are the reason lots of guys give up on the hobby. Of course to each his own. And it really isn't all about the price.

I agree about the Newbie Sampler available by any of the FOGS here. Here's what I would do if I wanted to learn. I would post there, take the next Fog up and tell him you wanted to try only good "moderate priced" (as you described them) smokes. Tell them how much you want to spend. I have never seen anyone post disappointment from that thread. Then when you have sampled the lot, having taken notes on them, go out a buy a box to be your 'standby' smoke. And branch out from there.

Cheers and good hunting.

They're all "okay" but as Eshaw99 said, it's all a matter of personal taste. Personally, I'm not big on most of those BUT that's me. The only one I've never heard of or tried is the Colita. I like STRONG cigars, other don't. When is comes to low to medium priced domestics, I will pretty much only buy maduros and larger ring sizes. So, my list at your local shop would be:

Excalibur
Hoyo de Monterrey
Oliva (if they have any)
Onyx Reserve
Astral Talanga Valley
Indian Tabac
Cuesta Rey
La Gloria Cubana Serie R
La Unica
El Rey del Mundo
CAO
Padron

Going on the more expensive side:
Arturo Fuente which includes the following
Hemmingway
Opus X
Diamond Crown Maximus
Anejo
Work or Art Madruo

Padron 1964
Padron 1926

Psyktek gave great advice, try a "Newbie Sampler Trade" ;)

Ahem, is there a reason I don't see regular Padrons on this list Mrs. Crabtree?

Here's my take:

Ramon Allones - not bad, but nothing that really grabs you to say that this is a good cigar.

Colita - never tried

Henry Clay - older ones were better

Saint Luis Rey - I really like these a lot, especially the maduro rothchild. A great everyday cigar.

Don Diego - too mild

Juan Lopez - these were introduced at this year's RTDA and are just getting out to the shops over the last couple of months. I've smoked several and these are very good. Full-bodied with a great finish.

Puros Indios - seems like folk either love these or hate them, everyone I have smoked have burned badly and have had an off flavor to them.

Sancho Panza - the SP Fuertes are very good, The othe SPs are kind of blah.

Since this is the range I normally smoke my 2 cents are:

Ramon Allones - not too bad, but nothing that jumps out to make it exceptional.

Colita - never heard of it.

Henry Clay - don't like them myself but YMMV.

Saint Luis Rey - These are pretty good, I've always had good draw and burn with them. Good everyday gar.

Don Diego - pretty light smoke, as mentioned by others it is pretty mild.

Juan Lopez - Haven't had one yet.

Puros Indios - I like both the Colorado and Maduro wrapper on the Presidente. I bought a number of boxes of each and smoke at least one a week. I like them.

Sancho Panza - varies allot, I've had good and bad ones but there are better for the money.

Usually I don't care about a name but Colita's sounds like a disease you get in the digestive tract. That alone makes me not want to put it in my mouth.

puros indios is very tasty esp if you like STRONGER cigars the maxima
reserve is a good smoke.the other puros indios are not as full bodied.

Colita means "little ass" in Spanish so that should be your first clue.

Actually, culita means little ass.

Newbie Sampler thread is the way to go. You'll get a decent variety, without spending a lot of dough and getting stuck with "icky" sticks.

Stay away from the colitas!! Once you get a hold of those, you can never get rid of them!.

Could not agree more. Great cigar for five bucks!

I haven't had a Juan Lopez yet. Haven't seen any come through my store, but they don't let me do the ordering...grrr
