As a brand new newbie (as of today) I have to ask a very important question right out of the gate.

I have read a lot about $ per stick in the cigar pass and hold-em forums as well as others. To make sure I am fair in my trades (and in case I ever lose at hold-em) I need to know if the $ per stick is the retail price or the price paid by an experienced cigar smoker?

My coolidor is full of $6 - $10 cigars at retail price with a few $30 - $35 cigars here and there. But this is not anywhere near what I pay for them.

So………when someone refers to a $8 stick I want to make sure I understand exactly what they are talking about.

My interpretation of MSRP and what I go by (and I stand to be corrected) is the price of a box divided by the number of sticks in the box. Now, that being said, don't look for the highest price on the net and go by that. I usually look at places that have decent prices like famoussmoke.com.

For Fuente, Padron, and Tatuaje use the threads in the cigar discussion. For most other cigars I use this LINK In the case of smokes like rare fuente cigars (Opus, Anejo, Hemingway Maduros) The price paid is usually higher, and then, as I understand it it is up to you to get the OK from the person you are dealing with.

I know for me, I would gladly accept some rare fuente cigars valued under $8 at MSRP. I hopes that helped, and I am sure a FOG will correct whatever I got wrong or missed. :sign: Welcome to the board and see you around! :thumbs:

Why not just post a list of what cigars are to be traded before each round?
That way you are playing for a known product and not an estimated price.

I can think of one way to clear up any issues:

Before you ship the payment, send a PM with your payout to the person, and see if there are any issues with your proposed sticks.

This is done in passes, why not in poker. I would rather know where I stand before I have cigars shipped out, and then need to replace/return/etc. because of questionable choices.

Of course, the seasoned vets of the poker table, and newer guys that gained some experience, could pass up on this once you understand what is acceptable.

Just my opinion on what I would do to prevent any headaches....

It is almost irrelevant what guide pricing is used. What IS important is that all cigar transactions in a given pass/draft/game use the same guide pricing for value determination. This is to insure that all cigars are priced and exchanged on a common basis.

So, for example, the passers could decide that JR Cigars' discount retail pricing could be the guide. In that case a Montecristo Fer de Lance might be $3 a stick from that internet retailer. OR the passers could decide that Uncle Chuckie's Cigarateria in Hartford would be the guide. The Fer de Lance might be $5.50 off the shelf there. At Nat Sherman's in NYC, it might be $7 with all the state and city taxes.

As long as one guide is agreed upon (or several roughly eqivalent guides in the case that one source does not carry all the cigars of interest, i.e. JR's + Holt's) then exchange value is on the same basis. That, IMO, is the key issue. Not whether the pricing is MSRP or retail.

Now, the hidden bite is that if you originally bought the Monte at Nat's and the guide selected is JR's, you're going to be out $4 when you make the exchange for a $3 Sancho Panza Double Maduro La Mancha bought by Joe Passer from JR's. I'm afraid this is a de facto penalty levied on those who purchase predominantly from brick and mortar stores located in high tax cities or states. I have not yet come up with a satisfactory solution for this quandry.
