In case you couldn't tell from the topic, this is a total newb question. My name is Mark; I just introduced myself in the newb forum. I have had an off and on interest in cigars for the past few years, but have never done any serious research on the topic. I have a baby boy due in February and would like to pass out the proverbial "it's a boy" cigar. I have a few smokers in the family, and would like to pass out cigars that are economical, yet "good". I'm sorry, at this point, I do not know what makes a good cigar. This would also be a starter cigar for myself as I would like to use this as an opportunity to get into the hobby. Any recommondations would be GREATLY appreciated. And I appologize in advance for the newbness of this post. Thank you!
Mark

Welcome to CP!

Maybe an AF Chateau Fuente Maduro or Natural...depending on your likes. I think they have a sun grown as well. Should be able to pick up a box of 20 for around $90 or so, maybe less? 50 rg, 4 1/2 inchs long, and they some with a cedar wrap with the cloth on the bottom which adds a nice look. I don't think you can get them with the "its a boy" printed on them, if thats what you were really looking for, but it sounded like you just wanted some to "hand out".

The nice thing about these is that it won't take you 2 hours to smoke one, and if you need to put it down to tend to the new family, its not like your putting down a $25 padron or something. Another plus is that if your handing them out to friends or family that smoke but likely can't tell the difference between this and a that $25 cigar, you won't cry when they light it, puff twice and put it out in their beer. lol

I've had a few and I was pretty happy with them for the price. Good luck with the new one!! :)

Excellent suggestion. The Chateau fuente are some of my most favorite smokes. If you get these, I highly recommend the maduro or sun grown.

Here's a few other suggestions:

- Oliva O or G maduro (G is cheaper, but o is better imho. Also, I recommend the perfecto shape for the novelty and that it's a quicker smoke)

- Don Pepin Garcia blue (the best sub $10 cigar I've ever had)

- CAO Brazilia Gol! (another shorter and less expensive smoke that's excellent)

Sounds like you've got an excuse to try a dozen cigars over the next couple of weeks. Then just a box of whatever tasted the best.

Unless you can ensure these are going to smokers and not going to be stuck in some drawer to be "saved", you're right to be buying a cheaper box of decent smokes.

The Chateau Fuente would be a nice little handout indeed. One thing I plan on doing is buying a few of a special cigar and saving them for my son's 18th birthday and smoking with him if he wants to.

Padron 2000. you can pick up a box of 26 for about 80 bucks and it s a great sub 5 dollar cigar.

good luck with the new arrival and get some sleep now while you can

Not really sure your price point on smokes but here are a couple that I have found appease a wide group of people.

- La Riqueza #3
- Padron 6000

You can probably find these in about the for about 7 or less a stick when buying a box (25/26 respectively)

My suggestion would be to get a sampler box from the online retailer of your choice. You can let each person pick what they want from the box and it helps to start the conversation about the cigars. i.e. "What interested you about that one?" Especially if you have a couple of family or friends that know what they like, they might be able to explain a bit about their choice to you and you can learn something different from each person. Additionally, while people are smoking them (if you're having a party?) they can each talk about what they think of each one without being compared to 20 other people who are smoking the exact same thing. If you need help picking a sampler, just plug in the cigars listed in to the search here and check out the reviews and comments that come up. Or just look for one that contains some of those suggested in this thread.

Mike.

I believe Arturo Fuente does have an actual "It's a Boy" cigar but I can't comment on what it is as far as the cigar goes. They'd probably be a Curleyhead (deluxe?) or something.

Not necessarily saying to go to these vendors Click Me!, but if you want something really nice to hand out go with Davidoff.

Search in the retailers thread for retailers such as Hermit111, Uptown Isy, NorcalMark, Keystone_Raider, Jackschwartz, just to name a few...........These guys will really take care of you as far as service and pricing go. send them a PM telling them what you are looking for.

Good luck with the cigars, and the new addition to your family.

I agree with the comment from jfields. check out his link, do can't do better than that,

Hope the baby and momma are fine. all that will happen to you is a raise in the white hair quotient.

they do a lower-end short filler one, but they also do an 8-5-8 It's a Boy cigar, too.

Find your way over to the newbie sampler thread, there are really nice people over there that really take care of you. If you specify what you want/looking for you can negotiate with the price range on the cigars you are looking for. I would buy a quick sampler, work your way through them quickly until you like one, and then make your purchase. I learned alot from my sampler trade and you will definately enjoy the sampler. I GUARANTEE IT!

Nevermind went back through the post, and you don't have much time. I would go for the DPG "my father", I will be giving a box to my brother-in-law with the same year/month, when his child is born. Along with some celebration sticks on the side.
