Over the next couple months I'll be building a humidor out of an old grandfather clock. There's a local wood shop that is going to help me get the insides right. I'm going to need some beads and I hear a lot of good things here about the heartfelt. I'm also going to need a couple hygrometer's as I've just found out the two I'm using aren't quite right and I need to test them and see how far off they are. I'm guessing I'll end up with some form of active humidification as well. I found a place on the web called humidorwholesaler dot com that has some pre-made shelves for singles that would be easier for me depending on how the building goes.
Like I said it's going to be a long build as it's a weekend thing when the kids aren't bugging me.
Anyway, thoughts ideas on where to get supplies is appreciated, in addition to anything I may have forgotten.
It certainly won't be filled by any stretch but it will be cooooooooool when done!!!!!!

Heartfelt are the way to go. So all good there. I would recommend buying an Boveda pack or do the salt test to get your hygrometer calibrated. If they do not have a calibrated butten, then you can always tape on how much the hygrometer is off, then from there you can subtract or add the % to make the humidor a perfect 65% or 70% which ever you prefer.

Thanks northernmoris, when I get that far and have dimensions I'll do that. I'm going to do the test on them and mark them. Hopefully that will take care of the problem and they aren't just funky.
I guess the only other question I can think of is the following.
I really have enjoyed Rocky Patel's (1990, 1999 con was A+, Honduran good also), CAO America was awesome and just recently had a Padron 2000 maduro that was awesome! So what should I save up for to have be my first box purchase?

btw I should add that as a newbie I still just buy singles so this will be my first purchase of a box, very excited about that!

Some quick calculations tell me I have just over 3 cubic feet of space. Is 1lb of heartfelt beads (70%) going to keep it between 65-70%?
Thanks for the help!

Can't go wrong with the Padron Maddie 2000 IMHO. I just had one with about 4 months on it. Boy was it a good daily smoke and a box can be had for about $90.

Mike, I had one of those last night, awesome little smoke. I'm going to pick a handful up this week or next. They may very well end up being the first box of smokes I buy:)

First box I bought was a box of monte #5, half corona's. They were ok, but out of the entire box I have smoked 3 and the rest have just sat. My second box was a box of Padron 2000's, best box purchase ever. I went with the natural's but I hear good things on the maddies so I may need to give those a shot.

As for hygrometers, check out cigarswag.com, there is a sale going on their now for $18 shipped for their hygrometers that can be adjusted. Get a boveda calibration pack, toss the hygrometer in it and let it sit. When your done you can then adjust the hygrometer so you don't need to remember how far off it is.

Heartfelt has a calculator on their web site, just enter your measurements in inches and it will give you a volume and how many oz. of beads you need. It's down at the bottom of the page when you are in the beads page.

Great input everyone, thanks a bunch! I'll have to order the hygrometer and calibration tomorrow if I find time. I'll check the calculator out tomorrow also.

here is a place for spanish cedar Click here

The Spanish cedar they sell is NOT kiln dried. I just got a shipment and a few of the boards are bleeding sap all over the place. :(

wow I have gotten some spanish cedar from them before and it was good. They are right up the street from where I work I will have to go in there and ask them if they have any that is dried in a kiln or if the can get some rp
