Black Patch Cigars

The rest of you guys should see them hit the mail box any day now. I just got word from my wife that a letter that I sent her almost 2 weeks before I mailed the cigars out, just got there a few days ago. I did send the letter regular post and your boxes Priority.

My pack arrived yesterday, right before I left to go to Double D's for a BBQ with the family.

Double D already smoked one at the BBQ, and he said it was horrible "Worse than a White owl or Dutch Master Corona De Luxe!" was his statement.

The rest are resting at 65°F / 65% RH and I'll smoke my first next weekend. If mine turns out real good, I'll give the last one to Double D so he can compare it to the one he had yesterday.

The 4th cigar I sent to rbbrock as a Trade Hitchhiker so he can do a review as well.

The Black Patch "Classics" are med. filler hand made cigars. The Black Patch "Select Blend" is a long filler hand made cigar as well as the Black Patch Reserve (2003) blend. The Select Blend and Reserve blends in their finished state
are considered Premium Cigars. The Classic blend is a beer or sport cigar for a quick occasion.
 
I just want to take a quick second and thank the owner of Black Patch Cigars. It is his kindness that has made this review possible. When I told him that there were a few of his cigars floating around here in Iraq, it seems that some of the 101st guys brought them along, he stepped up to the plate and sent a whole box (wow, was I surprised). I had about 7 of his cigars to start with, then after passing out all that I could to the troops, I decided to share with the rest of you guys that had expressed an interest. I have kept a 1 or 2 cigars for myself, and have 1 or 2 left to give out to any soldier that wants them. My room has become the un-official humidor for the 2nd Brigade Combat Team.

Just waiting on AVB and BrewMiester to report that their cigars had arrived.

Well it was the "Classic" Dale smoked, and in my opinion a company that only makes 3 lines of cigars should make all 3 taste as good as they can. If I want a quick BBQ or Beer cigar I'll smoke a Backwoods.

My reasoning is as follows, if the first cigar someone tries happens to be the cheapie, and it sucks, they are more than likely not going to try one of the more expensive ones.

BTW no where is it mentioned that the classic is a short / medium filler cigar on the BPCC website.

Wurm, cigar lesson A Short filler cigar or HML product (machine made with Homongenized wrapper) is not what the Classic is. Medium filler is still "hand bunched" and the binder and wrapper is natural tobacco and applied by hand and is not constructed with HML anywhere in the construction or makeup. Its simple economics to not waste leaf if another blend can be created. Fuente is a large producer of Med filler sticks. And there are some really good smokes out there on the market with fine tobaccos.

There are also some great short filler cigars out there as well.

And I still think if a small company that is just starting out only has 3 blends they should all be premium due to brand recognition. Once you gain your market share you can afford to release cheap medium filler blend cigars, until then its worth STORING the clippings for later use. Unless of course the company can't afford the storage space. Risking alienating your customers by selling a cheaper cigar that doesn't reflect on the quality or taste of your premium line is bad business in my opinion.

And I'm not talking about the Black Patch cigars, I'm talking about cigars in general. I'll reserve my opinion of the "Classic" when I've smoked one. I decided to let them rest for a week to give them the best chance possible.

*edit* And thanks for the lesson, I already knew that, but maybe you helped out someone else here with your information. It also doesn't change the fact that it isn't mentioned anywhere on the Black Patch website that the "Classics" are anything else but a long filler cigar.
 
I took one for the team on this.

Classic Corona 5.5 x 44

Construction was fine. Draw wasn't loose or tight. Burn OK with a white ash that lasted an inch.

Appearance was bad. Look to have water spots on the wrapper. Lots of blotches.

Taste was bad cheap tobacco. This is a gas station cigar all the way. Not even a good gas station cigar. Mild with a harshness too it. Made me spit allot. I will not be smoking anymore of these and I have no desire to try the higher end ones from this company. I'm thinking of sending these to GotaCohiba as a form of punishment.


Tim I would like to thank you for idea of spreading the wealth. If you like any of the people you sent these cigars too please release them from the obligation of doing a review.

Man, I was felling bummed that I missed the initial opportunity. I guess I shouldn't feel bad! Then again, your signature says that you dont know jack about cigars :cool:
