So, after a long run with Windows, I've finally decided to get a Mac. After having beta tested Vista for over 6 months, and then testing the final version recently, I'm really not impressed. I was expecting something much more dynamic. I wish Microsoft would base Windows off of UNIX; at least it would be much more stable. XP has worked out well for me, but it just doesn't seem Microsoft is making a lot of headway as far as improvements go. Besides, my servers are all Linux based, so I can do more with CP (testing, remote backups via rsync, etc).

In any case, my order is in route right now. Check out the tracking info:

For those who are familiar with ordering from Apple, do they ship from China??? You would think they would have a warehouse in the US. Seems kind of odd...

You sure it was a real site not a phisher? I agree that they should have some in stock here unless you ordered a bunch of odd things for yours. Hope it works out for you.

Welcome to the better side......

Sorry bro.... I bought mine from the Apple store

Which one did ya get.... I have the one that looks like half a basketball with a monitor.... LOL

Well done Rod, you took the plunge.

I had a mac notebook in my hand 3 months ago and walked out of the Apple shop. I am in two minds,
after only knowing windows my computer life. Somebody convince me that I will migrate without a
problem.

How about this... You can run XP while you're in OSX. Does that help? :)

Yes and no. When I was researching the general consensus was not to run XP on a mac.

Rod,

They do in fact drop ship from China. My iBook bought in 2004 and my sister's MacBook bought this winter both came direct from China via Fedex. You're good.

Should'a let me know you were looking. I can get an educational discount through my university account.

Brian,

Tell me what you want and I'll tell you what price I can get it for.

Got the 24" model with 2GB ram. Left everything else stock.

Very nice Rod..... one of the things I like is that stuff just works !!!..... plug in an external HD and it just works... no drivers, no bullshit.

I am not one of those computer guys who knows all that techno shit.

I recently bought an external HD for all of the pics and music. Installation instructions for a Windows OS was about 7 pages long... 1 short page for the Mac.....

Good luck with it !!!!

Good to hear all the positive feedback!

Wilkey, thanks for the offer, but I actually got a 25% discount! I know an Apple employee, so he let me use his discount.

If you're willing to make the switch, and you have the cash, then Macs are the way to go. Personally, I'm a Linux man - but I'm a huge geek. I've got Fedora 5, Red Hat, and Ubuntu running on my machines (plus an XP machine for my wife). Vista is not worth the money on the software or the hardware. I'm toying with the idea of buying a mac myself, for web development and business purposes. Its just a shame they are so expensive. My grandmother is getting a computer and honestly, the ideal machine is a Mac. But for a woman pushing 90, it doesn't make much sense to put out the cash for a nice new mac.

Check out the mac mini's. They're inexpensive, and you get quite a bit for the money.

Yes, this is normal. They are manufactured in China, and build to order machines are shipped directly from the factory to you.

You will migrate without a problem; should you need to, there's no reason you can't run XP on a Mac, it'll work just fine. You can reboot into XP native using Apple's BootCamp software or do what most people do, and just run XP side by side using Parallels Desktop

It'll give you that nice security blanket, but honestly, I don't think you'll have any issues with the switch over.
