Well, we got back last week from a 6 day, 5 night camping trip on the Boundary Waters. Here is a map of the area:

Not gonna go into any great detail, but we had a great time. Launched at Fall Lake and canoed up to Basswood Falls where we stayed for 3 days. Ran out of food, since the fish weren't biting a whole lot. Had to eat 1/2 a box of pancakes Thursday night and the other 1/2 on Friday morning. Caught 6 small mouth bass, a waleye and a couple big 30+ inch Pikes. Great time to relax.

I did get to smoke a VSG Round Corona Gorda and a Cohiba Piramide EL '01, both were outstanding.

Here are a few pictures from the week:

Looks like a sweet trip. I've been up there a number of times and found the fishing is hit or miss. A couple trips we had more fish than we knew what to do with (well, I guess we threw them back), and other trips we had nothing. You know, you could have probably fed your group with some of the mosquitoes and horseflies up there!

It looks like you had a great time and the weather was good (that's always a plus).
It's ALWAYS good to get away from the job and not work on any house projects.

Looks like an awesome time, glad to hear things went well.
Those are the trips one remembers years later, and only the highlights come to mind.

Cheers,
Rob

Nice pics, looks like you had a good time, it's always good to break up the same old same old.

I love the BWCA!

Fishing is much better in the spring and fall. Once it gets to be about the middle of June, things slow down a bit.

There's no better place on earth to canoe and camp, however.

Thanks for sharing your pictures.

Edited to add:

Depending on which way you went up there you may have driven right past my house. If you went up HWY 53 and went through Duluth, you drove right past us.

I found this old picture the other day, thought I'd add it in here. Nobody laugh please. By the way, interesting fact is that this was taken about 24 hours prior to the big blow-down/strait line wind storm back in '98 or '99.

that's me on the left, the other guy is my brother.

Beautiful! I had a chance to go to Boundary waters a few years back, but went on a diving tripe in the Florida Keys instead.

Edit: Also noticed this thread has a bit of age on it.

You know, it's funny you guys mention a trip up there. I just recently pm'd Brandon about how fun it would be to get a CP Boundary Waters trip organized. Of course it would require much planning, something that probably couldn't happen until summer 2010. And would probably have to be limited to about 10 people because of camping and group size restrictions and permits. And finally I would prefer that it would be limited to those with serious camping/backpacking/paddling/backcountry experience. It's not that we're going out to scale Everest, but having some basic skills is a prerequisite, since it is a true wilderness experience (i.e. more than two hours from emergency medical care.)

We could use my place as a "staging area" of sorts for people to leave their vehicles if needed. We could load up here, tie on the canoes, and head up the highway. They've limited the amount of parking at some of the entry points the last year or so. I've got a 17 ft canoe we could use, too.

You know, the canoe rentals up there seemed so inexpensive last time I visited that it's almost not worth the hassle of driving with canoes any further than from Ely! Unfortunately, I just sold my 17' Penobscot a couple years ago. What a great canoe that was.

I see this picture of a man in shorts standing in what I would think is frigid waters at this time. Turns out someone rived and old thread

Forget the canoe, kayaks are much more fun.

Put me on the list for next year. I don't see me driving my canoe up from Ohio but I can work out some of the other needed items.
