Whisky wholesalers Red Lion Blending has gone in to receivership, and announced the sale of 300 casks, the majority of which have been maturing for 35 years. Anyone interested in registering for the prospectus should contact Andrew Stoneman or Sallyanne Pitt of Menzies Corporate Restructuring, tel: + 44(0)20 7291 9750

I guess it would depend on the distillery that made it to begin with, some are more well known and hence worth more. A standard cask 35 years old most likely has lost 30-40% already so that would mean 300-350 bottles left in it. I'd have to guess it would be $10-12,000 per cask not counting bottling fees for a midline brand.

I don't think the bottling fee would be that much per bottle but the transport to the bottler, labels, packaging storage and shipment to the US would easily double the price IMHO.

Lets see, $20K, 5 guys @ $4K each and 70 bottles each. Thats only about $57 per bottle.

A standard cask holds 55 gallons filled to the brim. If the cask is 35 years old, and has lost 40% of it's contents, that means it's down to 33 gallons. Since there's 2.377548 gallons to a case of twelve 750ml bottles, that'd give you 13.88 cases or 166.5 bottles at cask strength. The only way to get 300 bottles would be to cut the proof (assuming on the high side it's 145.0) down to 80.0.

Now, in order to get it into the U.S., you'd need someone to do a Customs entry, but it's going to have to go to a licensed distillery or wholesaler. And once it gets here, you're going to owe Federal taxes of $13.50 a PROOF gallon (a gallon at 100.0 proof) which will amount to $650., plus any applicable state taxes.

Thanks for the info! I doubt I'll ever get that kind of money to spend on a cask but one can always hope!
