Calling anyone who knows anything about desks...

Alrightie,
Sometime in the 1940's, (I'm probably wrong), my girlfriend's grandmother bought a desk in Paris. It is taller than I am, and wider than I am. The desk was completely covered in black sute. Anyways, the shipped it here, had it cleaned up, and it sat in her grandmother's home till the day she died. The desk now belongs to her aunt and she is wanting me (because I can use a computer) to find someone who might be wanting to buy or re-sell this desk. Does anyone know where I might be able to sell this thing. Here's some shots of it:

It has over 120 drawers in it. We even have videos of the desk, if you want me to mail you it. anyone with any ideas?

Maybe try eBay but if I were you, I'd get it appraised first. I'd bet that thing could fetch $20,000 to $30,000 in one of the snotty-a$$ed, upscale antique stores in Fairfield County in Connecticut

I hate to blow that one out of the water, but it was once appraised, for over 500 grand. She wants to sell it for around 300 grand. Her grandmother, went appraised in the mid 90's, wanted nothing short of 1 million. woman? go figure...


Also if it sells she'll pay off my car and I get a seller's bonus! lol

LMAO, well I guess a career in appraising antiques is not something I should consider, huh? :laugh:

I would try to find some antique dealer in the most upscale of the upscale areas in the country and tell them what ya got. Grosse Point, MI, Westchester County, NY, Beverly Hills, CA and Upperville VA :0 (who lives there? ??? ) come to my mind immediately but there's always some snobby area near every large city where the fat cats live so that's where I'd go hunting if I were you

If it's worth that much perhaps a professional auction house somewhere. Even if you have just one piece they may have a consignment auction comming up in the future they could add it to. Just a thought since it is up there that high. Even if there not interested they may be able to set you on the right trail.

I would agree with CC except that its just worth so much I'm not sure how many places out there would be interested in a single piece worth so much. Again though, even if there not interested they may at least put you on the right trail.

I have no idea how it's spelled either because I'm not even sure if it's a real word

An oh yeah, the New Yorkers come up here and spend tens of thousands of dollars on junk in overpriced antique shops primarily in western Connecticut. To me it's a half a step up from scrounging at garage sales. I suppose if you have the time and the inclination to do it, great, it's like any hobby, it takes time and interest (gee kinda like cigars, huh? ). I suppose I shouldn't knock it, I'm just not interested in it myself but lots of people around here are.

There are some places that literally manufacture fake antiques and some of these idiots buy them just the same :sign:

Now that I think about it, CaptainB's family has an antique shop on Cape Cod. He was telling me at an LI Herf once that (I think it's his mom) has an "eye" for great deals. Since she's been in the business for so many years, she knows what something's worth and she's very successful buying and re-selling antiques.

As a PBS nerd that loves the antiques roadshow, er show, check out the website for a list of appraisers they use, as well as auction houses, etc here

Sarah Pratt is in Woodbury, CT in Litchfield County. Woodbury is known for its MANY antique shops. I think her husband Wayne got caught up in the Governor's scandal here and got totally screwed even though he and Sarah are nice people.

I think your best bet would be to contact Christie's or Sotherby's. You would probably get close to what you are looking for in one of their auctions

We're on the same page Fast, I'd add Shongut Jacob too even though they aren't as well know they have some very upscale clientel.

If it is appraised at that value and you have in writting from a reputable dealer then contact the two large auction houses, Christie's and Southeby's. If it is worth that kind of money then they can tell you how to maximize your return. I will say this it ain't cheap their commision rates are up there.

thanks guys. The big problem is getting it (the desk takes 8 men to move) all the way up there. Those places have to see it and things like that before they say anything. I think that's what we might do though. If anyone else has any ideas, let me know! And to blow all your car ideas, here is my dream car:
