Read the story HERE

My 3 yr old son found one of these in the Wal-Mart parking lot in Weatherford Texas and was playing with it. It just didn't look right to me so I took it away from him and examined it.

Weatherford Police were called to Wal-Mart where they took posession of the device. I hope to never see another, especially in my son's hand.

Good thinking on removing the threat and getting the cops there. As if enough IEDs weren't killing Americans abroad - we need them at home too?

These are the people that need to enlist and go to the War so they can see what it is really like - then maybe they'll wisen up. But I wouldn't hold my breath.

What will people think of next??? ??? Glad you did the right thing and called the police.

WOW, I am really thankful that you and your son are ok. It is amazing how vigilant parents must be these days.
God Bless,

Unfortunately you guys are right. We can no longer think of the world we live in as a safe place for kids to play, or adults either for that matter. :(

I am saddened by this fact, and terrified by my lack of ability to change it. But I believe this little scare as well as the shooting the other day in my apartment complex has solidified my need for self defense and defensive vigelance. And it has started to turn my wife around as well.

I suppose it is right on the money to say, Ultimately, each and every one of us is or must be our own private "Homeland Security Force" cause Uncle Sam just ain't our neighbour. ???

Your right on the money Puro. The police cannot take care of all of us. At best, they can respond AFTER the fact most of the time. I believe it is all of our duties as citizens to protect ourselves, our families, and our neighbors when called upon to do so.

I'm sorry to hear son found one, but it's great to know you got rid of it in time. That's sounds pretty crazy. I hadn't heard of them in tennis balls before, but I guess I'm not too surprised.

Gotta wonder about this article though... Any blast that would've shaken houses four blocks away would've made a grease spot out of the dog, and probably knocked down at least (if not all of) the owner's house as well....

and big firecrackers, while enough to kill the dog, certainly wouldn't do the house shaking trick.

"Gerald Curtis, 58, was playing fetch on Saturday with Ivy, a friend's dog, when the ball exploded inside her mouth. The blast shook houses four blocks away and injured Ivy so badly she could not be saved. A veterinarian whom police called to the scene euthanized the dog...

Investigators are trying to determine what was inside the ball that killed Ivy. But Hefley says they're basically big firecrackers, often made by children. Making tennis ball bombs can result in a five-year prison sentence and $100,000 fine."

Yes, I too find the verbage of the story somewhat suspect, for the same reasons you mentioned. But I have a friend who testified to seeing one just like it, demolish/blow out a solid wood door at which it was thrown. I personally wouldn't mind seeing the true damage one could do (in a controlled study of course) but not sure I would be able to handle the knowledge now, knowing that my son played with one.

This verbage about the story makes a bit more sense Snopes.com

I'm glad you and your son are OK. The irresponsibility makes me sick. Not sure why one of these was in a public place.

After reading the post I did a web search and there is a lot of Info about this. There are a few sites that tell how to make a tennis ball bomb :sneaky:
I guess we should all be alert especialy with tennis balls that have tape on them.
I'm glad you knew what to look for PuroBrat
Thanks for the heads up

It's unbelievable that we as a society have become so disconnected that this happens over 300 times a year. We as a people have got to start taking responsibility for our lives and each other. Until we turn the trend of "it's not my problem" this is going to get worse and worse ???

I'm glad that your son is ok and I hope they cought the dumba$$ who built the bomb in the first place.
