Had the brother in law over for dinner needless to say we drank some brews and steped outside for a smoke. I had 5-6 Bass in me and was feeling no pain when I lit my first PAM 1964 Principe. I'm definately a Padron fan but this smoke was average imho and not worth the price, I'd just assume smoke a 3000.

Was it the brew the stick or a combination there of?

I like drinking a beer with my cigar, but I've noticed it's harder to focus on the stick when I am lit.

From my experience most of the beer I have tasted with my cigars has gone well together. I've drank mostly Ale's and Lager's when I was smoking my cigars.

It may shock some of you to know that I like Fat Tire, a red ale. Frankly any red or pale ale goes good with a smoke. Stouts are ok, but only if I'm not eating or smoking.

I love brown ales, and love cigars with them. The culprit is you. You didnt match the hatch with the catch. You are right in the 3000 would have been a better pair. Or, keep the smoke, and instead of the bass, try a 4 pack of Samuel Smith Nut Brown ale. Probably a better pairing. And after thinking on it, Speckeled Hen is a good match also.

THe last time I was out in Petaluma CA, Iwas introduced to Fat Tire. Very nice beer!

I think Fat Tire is kinda nasty... Just not into that type of beer.

I tend to find that my cigars are less prominent if I had been drinking a lot before smoking them versus drinking WHILE I smoke.

I think cigars and beer are a fine mix, but smoking AFTER drinking six beers you can't expect too much. Obviously. Your palate is going to be dead, thats why crappy food like white castle tastes agreeable at that point.

I agree that Fat tire is great, Samuel Smith Winter Welcome are better. Cask conditioned real ale at a local brew pub is even better still.

Hey gang,
For me its all in the type of drink and whether it matches the cigar.
Beer I always have a mild smoke like 858, Torano reserve, Romeo y Julieta and similar smokes. Beer tends to mask all of the flavor unless they are well matched.
My drink of choice is vodka tonic which is a clean enough drnk to allow almost any smoke from a nice smooth Romeo to an opus and still taste every puff.

First of all your drank Bass which is like skunk piss in a bottle. Then smoke a fine smoke after crappy beer. No surprise the stick may have not tasted good to you. :p

On a serious note tho. I've smoked cigars and drank many different types of beers from Stouts to IIPA. I've noticed not all cigars match up with beers. And I refuse to drink piss water beer so its nothing but the good stuff for me.

I'm sure I'm speaking the obvious that the choise of beer, ones taste buds, and their palate for cigars differ. I personally think that many beers distorts a lot of stuff... taste buds for the most part, as well as having a meal just before a cigar, well for me anyways.

I try and find something comparable to what I'm smoking. If its a lighter, less powerful smoke (say, IMHO, a Paratagas 150) then I'll drink something that won't be overpowering (an amber ale, perhaps). I'm fond of Sassont Dupont, and one other Belgian ale that I can't think of at the moment.

usually when I'm smoking something a bit more powerful, full bodied I'll amp up the drink to a more "peaty" scotch (say, Laphroaig, sorry for the massacred spelling).

Again, I do think it comes down to personal tastes and at least this is what works for me.

About a month ago I was smoking a 1926 nat. I had a scotch and everything was fine. Switched to a pale ale the cigar started tasting like crap. I tossed the beer I rinsed my mouth out and finished the cigar with more scotch and all was well. Generally, I've never have a problem with what I drink when I somke but there could be something to the ipa/pale/bitter ales that doesn't work for some people and certain cigars.

I agree with most guys here...you have to pair the two accordingly. If I want a heavy, hoppy beer like Arogant Bastard or any Barley Wine I will go with a strong cigar like an Opus X or LFD Double Ligero. If I want something lighter to go with a PAM 64 I'll have a Grolsch or even crap like Coors. With a Partagas 150 I drink water!!

Hahahah well put! I'd have to say that I've had better success truly enjoying and savoring the mild taste of this brand of cigar with just that... water! I'd rather too as I love the flavor and anything else just obscures the enjoyment.

Darren :)

Last weekend I lit up an anejo after 4-5 coronas, and I thought it was kind of flat. I think that like you the alcohol muted my cigar sensory experience.

I'll probably stay away from my expensive cigars the next time I'm drinkin!

I like jello shots from a buxom gal, a good smoke and the only beer I have is cold. Unless room temperature Guiness is available.
