As an American, I'm all for winning and can appreciate a good butt kicking.  However, I'm conflicted on celebrating Cinco De Mayo.  Mexico beat the French in the Battle of Puebla.  Post Charlemagne and Napoleon, the French have not won a War since the late 1800's (i think it was the Franco-Siamese War) on their own.  So I feel like while celebrating Mexico's victory is necessary, i also feel that it was almost a Gimme.  I mean, in golf terms, you dont celebrate a Gimme Putt.  You Celebrate the ones you were uncertain about.

So do you celebrate Cinco De Mayo and why?  And could someone correct me if I'm wrong in thinking France's military power house is a thing of the past?

I'm an equal opportunity celebrator of holidays. Hell I'll even do Bastille Day. However, I draw the line at St. Patrick's Day. Beer and boiled meat just don't do it for me. besides, Hell, for an Italian, is being locked in an Irish Pub where it's perpetually St. Patrick's.

My understanding is that it's a MUCH bigger holiday here than in Mexico, because drinking.  ;)

Naw, I don't, though.  Don't really do St. Patrick's either.  I need no excuses to imbibe!

Ok umm here goes my take... Since you asked. It's basically a "holiday" that was started to celebrate Mexican American cultural heritage. In reality it's now nothing more than a bastardized version of what it once was, it was community celebrations in towns/cities mostly throughout the US southwest with heavy Mexican American populations. It is now whored by corporate America.

It's a drinking "holiday".

The aspects of cultural celebration that still take place are relevant in celebrating diversity and what makes America great.

Edit to add a note of history.

The US supported Mexico against the French.

Yet another reason to have an amateur night to join St. Padrig's day and the rest of them, I'd rather celebrate another day when you don't have to park so dam far away from the food and drink and fight the surly crowds of idiots who drink far too much. I agree with the rest of the posts above. My daughters and I used to have Quattro de Mayo before they left for college to avoid Cinco de Mayo crowds.

I don't make a point of celebrating it. I've been to both Ireland and Mexico. Being half Mexican I suppose I have more impetus to celebrating Cinco de Mayo however between the two drinking holidays I make a point of celebrating St. Paddy's day.
