This is so inane I had to warn all of you out there in CP land. All this guy is doing is leaving sugar and flavorings in his mouth before puffing, he might as well smoke Acids. Avoid this at all costs!

From the Cigar Advisor email of 09/26/09

Regarding your recent feature on palate cleansing, I have practiced the continuous refreshing of the palate while smoking a cigar for 25 years using Black Sambuca and licorice candy (preferably, Good & Plenty candy), with a cold glass of seltzer or sparkling water. I sip the Sambuca, and chew on a small amount of the licorice, take one or two puffs on my cigar, then take a light sip of the seltzer to cleanse the palate before going back to the Sambuca and licorice. At times when I was at a football game and cigar smoking was allowed, having some licorice in my pocket was an ample substitute for the Sambuca. I have shared this experience with many friends, and today, all of them use it.

Sounds logical if he was doing this just once before enjoying the cigar in an effort to cleanse his palate. However, going back and forth with sambuca and licorice and then inhaling his cigar doesn't really seem like cleansing the palate so much as it is having a sweet taste in your mouth for each inhale (much like what AVB stated above). In order to cleanse my palate after a spicy meal, I'll sometimes drink a coca cola or just gargle and brush my teeth and then enjoy my cigar. This method tends to work best for me.

I like pickled ginger...although that's just because I like pickled ginger. I never really gave much consideration to cleansing the palate.

I'll stick with whiskey. It goes with everything and cigars just get better if you sip in between puffs.

I'm cleansing my palate right now with some good coffee. Goes rather well with the HDM Palmas Extra I'm smoking. :D

Ackkk... :0 To me that would be nasty. I prefer Diet Dr. Pepper or Coffee myself.

Or Vodka, either way I'm with Matt here. What this guy is doing is masking the true and wonderful flavors we get from a fine cigar. Poor basted.

If you can't take the taste of cigars, and need to invade your mouth with sugars aplenty... why smoke cigars?

I usually smoke with a lass of Peligrinos sparking water. Its a great way to clean your mouth out so you get the flavor of every puff. But hey thats just me.

Ok, so I'm curious as to cleansing the palate after smoking a cigar...sometimes I even have that cigar taste in my mouth the morning after...what's a good way to cleanse your palate to get rid of that?

A good ole' fashioned toothbrush followed by Listerine usually works for me.

I sometimes will have an orange soda after a smoke, the carbonated citrus seems to do a good job at cleansing a strong cigar aftertaste.

Those little listerene strips work pretty good...but got to warn you that you should not take one right after smoking. Damn near caught my tounge on fire.

As others have said just brushing your teeth before bed seems to help with that morning after taste. Another think that I have tried when available is bananas. For some reason it seems to kill that after cigar taste for me without leaving some other overpowering after taste.

Licorice - yuck

I hate that stuff, I couldn't see how that could clear your palate.

I wonder what his tasting notes would be like:

Started out with a little bit of licorice, mellowed out with more licorice, and ended with a sweet licorice taste.

There was a day, distant as it seems now, that I liked Sambuca. I would imagine if I had a shot of that stuff now I would probably lose the insides of my stomach as I hurled because the taste would instantly remind of way too many nights that had a bad ending (you know... the college days). However, I can see how Sambuca would be a good choice to cleanse your palate; it just wouldn't be something that I would want to do after I began smoking my cigar. Once my palate is cleansed, then it's time to enjoy the full flavor of the smoke.
