CNN Report on banned Cuban cigars

Very interesting! Maybe Lew Rothman really does know something.

Not really much of a story there. Cigar Aficionado  can yell all they want but it won't have any effect on US policy towards Cuba.

The embargo will not end anytime in the near future, you can count on that. ;)

Can I ask why you think this? I can buy junk straight from China and the gov has no problem. It seems like the old guard of anti communism changed a long time ago. Why still penalize them.

There are a large number of voters and politicians in this country that are ex-patriot Cubans. They apply tons of pressure on the other members of congress to keep the embargo in place. Another thing to think about here is how do you redistribute the property taken and nationalized by Fidel. Give it back to the Padrons, the Toranos, Olivas, Placensias and the 100 other families displaced by the nationalization of all major industry on the island? I would love more than anything to be the first guy to legally go to Cuba and sit on the beach with a mojito and a Cohiba. Is it going to happen...............NOPE. As long as there are people that are bitter about what happened(and rightly so on some accounts) there will always be an embargo. Oh yeah, one more thing. There is a theory out there that because Cuba refuses to become a member of the WORLD BANK organization they will be ostracized by all the countries that participate. Conspiracy, conspiracy, conspiracy.

As soon as China is a small island off of the coast of the USA hosting nukes from a hostile power that could decimate our country, you've got a good point.

Anyway, I'm having a hard time caring about the embargo. I think it's a mistake if the goal is to bring down Castro, but other than that, I really could care less if it is in place or not.

And no, I don't believe that Cuba is suffering because of the embargo; they have the rest of the world to trade with or accept direct foreign investment from. I believe Cuba is suffering because of Fidel's policies and martinet-style rule.

While it lessens every year, the agricultural industry in the US has some political pull, maybe even more than the ex-pats in Miami. These are the folks pushing for an end to the embargo as we now know it. They have limited trade right now and would love to be able to export even more agricultural products 90 miles off shore. Cuba wants it, the US farmers want it, eventually it'll happen.

I sure hope President Kennedy does something about this!!!

I thought we weren't supposed to speak about politics :whistling:

As long as Cuban expatriots live and vote in the US the embargo will continue. The Cuban PAC with its money and influence is hard to ignore, not to mention the Cuban-American Senators and Congressmen.

You never know. CA made it the theme of their magazine and they brought up a lot of interesting points. The good thing is that it brings the question to the forefront of the population at large. That CNN report also helps to do the same thing. When it is in front of people it is more likely to not be swept under the rug and not thought about. Then I think the hypocrisies of the policy can sway the majority to want to do something about it.

I have inquired to several politicians running for the presidency on what their stance is on this topic. I want them thinking about it and possibly using it to garner more votes.
