Coolerdor opening Question

Greetings. Just introduced myself and here is my first post. I have a question regarding how long you can go without opening a coolerdor. I've seen various thoughts on the subject ranging from daily to at least once a month but here is my plight. I don't have a coolerdor yet but am considering one. I'm military overseas so my issue is amassing my cigar collection and then how I care for it when I leave for my next duty station. If I set up a coolerdor and it is maintaining RH well can it go without being opened for the two months it will take to arrive from point A to point B? This will determine how out of hand my cigar purchasing gets since I've already outgrown my desktop and now have a couple of tupperdors. I don't want to stock up more than I can smoke in the next year if I ultimately can't safely move the smokes when I have to leave. Any input is appreciated.

..... my input is "search box is your friend".

Also, coolers are amazing for storing stogies. I would guess that 85% or more of us are still using coolers along with whatever desktops, vinos, or cabinets we may have. I would say, in terms of the opening, as long as there are no real major temperature swings, you should be fine w 2 months. Just be sure to pack any empty space in your cooler with 'air bags' or packaging bubbles so there is minimal 'wiggle' room during your point A to B moves. Good luck, and thanks for the service.

Thanks for the input. I read some other posts on the subject but was still left wondering. Common sense tells me I should be fine but I have no experience with coolerdors or with leaving any humidor closed for an extended period of time.

I think Austen (set in stone) hit it right on the head! I think you will be fine. Now start buying some smokes and make sure you use a proper humidifier in the cooler most here will recommend the Heartfelt Beads as your best option. Heartfelt has a great sizing calculator on there website to get the proper amount of beads for the cooler of your choice. Good luck and make sure you keep us posted on how it works out for you and Thank you for your service brother!

Welcome abord brother,
Paul

If it's a cooler that seals well like a Coleman Marine, you can leave the cooler unopened for much longer than 2 months assuming the cooler is full and has already reached a point of stasis where they humidity is holding stable at a level that you desire (preferably using beads). Without significant temperature swings for prolonged periods of time, the cooler should be able to maintain the proper level of humidity for an extended duration of time. I have coolers where I use beads to maintain rH. I check on them once a year, and they maintain rH splendidly. If the coolers are full...I typically don't even need to recharge the beads. I store these coolers in my basement, but it is a finished basement with heat and A/C, and I live the in Northeast, so there is significant temp and humidity fluctuations, even in my basement. When you get down to it, it would be impossible to find a cheaper, easier, more efficient way to store your cigars long term.

Your in a combat zone, any MK19 cans laying around.....if so use them and send me one as well.

The cooler should be fine, I used one when I was in Iraq the second time, but I leftist with the guys I RIPd with, as a good karma thing.
I shipped 2 ammo cans of cigars home in our connex, but this was in Nov-Jan....so heat was not an issue. Pulled them out of the box, and smoked one driving home that day no worries.

A bit off topic, but honestly, ammo cans are made to be air and water tight and coolers rock as well

Tim

PS: you shoulda heck and see if you can MPS the can to me at my Apo.....ha ha

MX,

Not presently in a combat zone, actually right across the border from you at NATO AB Geilenkirchen but thanks for the heads up on the ammo cans. Might have to look into that next time I deploy.

I used bubble wrap to fill up empty space in my coolers. When I had coolers with empty space in them..... :p

Do you know if the styrofoam peanuts would work as well? I wouldn't think they would affect the humidity level.

Thanks for the input. Knowing that you're able to check on your coolers once a year makes me feel much better about the approx two months of shipping time. My only concern now is temperature control since it's completely out of my hands.

I'm at GK as well. If you ever want to get together, let me know. Also have a bunch of sticks to hand off if you havenA't had any of them. I've found my tastes have changed since acquiring them.

How far are you from Ramstein? I can tell you more about the geography of the surrounding countries than I can of actually here in Germany...

I've got a mini-fridgidor going on here. I don't have thousands of cigars, but enough that I need to keep in mind that I'll eventually be moving. I've sometimes wondered how I'm going to get them all back Stateside (or wherever the next place is). I'm more worried about the heat than I am damage. I think I may just end up mailing a lot of it back, just like I do with my guitars. It's reimbursable.

Gotcha. That's definitely in range for a(n) herf. MX used to set up the Euroherfs, which I was unfortunately never able to attend due to bad timing. He's on his way out the door, though. I don't know of too many different places around, though I know people who know people and might know other people who know where to go. I know of one place in Saarbrucken that is pretty nice, but that's about it.

Heck with the QSH. I'm thinking Quad NATION Herf! :D

I used to set them up t the LCDH there re a few in Germany, we used to drive about 1.5 hours on avg, but would stray into the 3 hour range if needed

Right-O. I'll try and see if I can't look up the LCDH's here in the Big D. If this weather would break and be at all predictable I'd love to host a BBQ or something here. There's a few brothers semi-local, and one or two right here at Ramstein. I've even got lots of room for overnight stragglers/drunkards.

This sounds like a great idea guys. Weather has been very counterproductive to my after work activities but I manage to suffer through it.

Hey Matt, next time you're at the CSS give me a shout. I'm the guy with the 9ers banner in my office.

Heat is my concern as well, mailing is probably the best bet
