The embargo will end as soon as someone as enough international political acumen to realize that all it does today is push Castro into Chavez's alliance, weakening our grip on the entire region. Even with Fidel still in power, there is no way in hell he'd seek to go against the states if Havanna was teaming with American tourists, hotels, restaurants - ie. money.

Next time I travel to Cuba I'm taking a suitcase full of corn and see what I can bring back.

This is a pretty clever move, actually. This guy proposes this law knowing full well that it won't pass. He gains support from cigar smokers, and loses absolutely nothing in the process. (The same thing is happening at a national level right now in other areas of policy...folks are proposing stuff they know doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell so that they can go back to their constituencies and say, "I tried to fix this, but the bums wouldn't let me!" Gotta love election years.)

I think there are MANY things that will have to be cleared up before any embargo ends and we're legally selling Cuban cigars on these shores. There was a recent "what if" article published in the Spring 2006 edition of Cigar Magazine (page 125 - 129). If anyone has this, its a good read. Try and track down this back issue if but for this op ed piece.

The biggest thing I took home from this article was that if the embargo ends and Cuban puros are allowed to be imported, those companies who are able to distribute them will have a harder time trying to sell their non Cuban cigars that they have established most if not all of their reputation on. This doesn't even take into consideration the legal battles that will try and sort out who owns the rights to names, etc....

It would be nice if we could have that forgidden fruit right at our doorsteps, but for it to take place there's much involved and it certainly doesn't look as easy as it might.

I'm actually fairly sure this law would be in direct violation of the embargo anyways, I believe Cuba is allowed to accept donations, not barter or purchase with Cuba goods.

It would be nice to see Cuba as a tourist island,hotels,casinos,and restraunts again...of course I never seen it like that but my relatives have.
I also think if Cuba becomes democratic the old farmers who were exiled and there land taken may again have there land back.If this is true then there would be no problems with nameing and NC cigars loesing out.I think also,those who do go back wont pack up dominican,nicaraguan and honduran shops so quickly.

But it is a tourist island...I went there just last year and am planning on going back next year.

China is practically communist and we deal with them, I think that if the right person stepped into the Cuban seat there would definately be talks.

But it is a tourist island...I went there just last year and am planning on going back next year.

It may very well be,but not even close to how it was in the 50s or 60s.

We trade with China and give them very favorable terms. In fact, we can't send our money over there fast enough. But what terrible things has Cuba done that China hasn't? Plenty of human rights violations and political oppression in both places...in terms of sheer numbers of political imprisonment and executions, I don't think Cuba even comes close. I guess the only difference is that China isn't presently led by a guy who permitted U.S.-aimed missles to be installed in his country. For this reason, I guess I am hopeful that trade will open up with Cuba once Castr kicks it...that would put Cuba in the same boat as China at that point. Of course, looking for internal consistency in foreign policy isn't always a safe bet.

I think opening up trade-especially tourist trade-with Cuba is a great way to undermine Communism. My folks went to Vietnam a few years back, and tourism was undercutting Communism all over the place. If a tourist comes into your country, he's going to get around, buy stuff, eat at private restaurants, visit farms (wink), and so on. Money changes hands and Big Brother doesn't get his cut.
